I've been doing Starting Strength for almost a month now. Got the idea from this forum and love the exercise. What I'm looking for is what is a good typical diet when doing strength training?

Quick backstory: 2008 I weighed 240 lbs and did dietary changes since then to get to 185. Since doing Starting Strength I've put on 3-5 lbs and weigh 190 now, however I lowered my body fat % from 18.3 to 16.8.

Right now I've just been eating how I have for a while, except eating a little more from working out. I eat a lot of almonds/nuts have a banana every day, have protein shakes after working out, that kind of stuff. Should I add in cream cheese (I think that's what a lot of people do)?

Looking for any advice at what to do for a diet. I don't mind gaining a little weight while starting building up muscle mass, but ultimately I want to weigh in the mid 170's.

I'm guessing you counted calories to drop a lot of that weight? I'd use your maintenance calories and ensure you are getting 0.8-1 grams/lb of protein per bodyweight. If you aren't making gains on maintenance calories, increase daily intake by about 200-300 per day or so.

I've definitely been making gains, but that's expected the first month of a new program from a lazy person anyway lol. So I need to switch up and take in a lot of protein. I probably have around half my body weight in protein a day, at least the days I workout and take protein. I think I'll start taking a protein shake every day then.

You should definitely be having 0.8 - 1.0g of protein per pound of body weight like Impulsive mentioned, so that's 152 - 190g per day based on your weight. You should have that every day, regardless if you lifted that day or not as your body is repairing itself continuously.

You'll find you will have to cut out a lot of fat and/or carbs to be able to get that much protein while also maintaining the calories you want to be at. If you run into problems staying regular at the bathroom...two words...Kiwi fruit. ;\)

I personally just cater my meals around getting lower calorie protein then add other shit I like to be within a calorie limit. Essentially, I try and get 40 grams in a meal in a 400-500 calories range while eating an actual meal (not just brocolli and a chicken breast).

Alternately, you can eat something smaller, snack sized and add in a protein shake.

Thanks for the info! I'm thinking in 2 weeks I'm going to add Power Cleans, haven't tried them yet. And haven't done much else except their lifts MWF, going to do some more cardio, I used the punching bag a few times but nothing much. I will add things in as I go on to try to do some type of workout 5-7 days a week.

So you're still trying to lose weight, but add muscle at the same time...?

Not right away. My goal is to be in the 170s, but realize I will put on weight at first. I don't mind doing so, as long as the weight I'm putting on is the right kind of weight. =] Ordered more protein powder tonight actually and got some fruit as I'm also trying to eat more healthy and fresh foods.

I haven't made any short term goals just goals for the year. I've hit my current max for a few lifts I think and so I have to slowly work them up.

You're destined to failure if you don't make short term goals...
