Rates for Skunk 2 coilovers are 400F/500R, i think the original skunkworks coilovers were 400/300 but not sure on that but I know the current ones are 400/500.

I am pretty sure off the shelf GC are 325/250 for both civic and integras.

"Rates for Skunk 2 coilovers are 400F/500R"

That doesn't look right. Spring rates are always higher up front to account for heavier weight. Handling must be interesting.

Yes, I think the rates are still 400f 300r, although I heard somewhere that the new ones are 500f and 350r, I dont know what mine are, maybe I will call up skunk2 and find out and post up what I find. All I know is that with the koni yellows I can come around a corner quite fast and the car doesnt lean at all, its amazing.

No, they're not "always higher up front." A lot of people run higher rear rates for chassis balance. It's a common setup for road race cars. RealTime's ITR's use higher rear rates.
You can look right at that chart Hondaman posted and see that the stock ITR springs are 250 linear front and 250 progressive rear. So, explain to me how you know "spring rates are always higher up front."

Re: Spring Rates Listed Here

Rich - don't you know the engine weighs more so the front springs have to be higher otherwise the car will sag - duh! (this is a joke for anyone that can't see that)

Seriously, I've never seen an off-the-shelf spring setup run higher in the rear unless it's a custom order. I've heard the skunk2s are 500F/400R now but don't know for sure. I've also heard the Teg kits were 500/400 while the Civics were still 400/300. It's hard to say but if anyone does call skunk and find out they'll get a big Hondaman pat on the back .

Side note - there's a lot of us who do/have run higher rates in the rear with great results. Actually if the rear springs aren't higher in rate you're only hurting your performance.

Oh yeah - I got a new spring rate to add .

Re: Spring Rates Listed Here

Yeah, seems like a lot of the kits run higher front rates to make it seem like the ride is smooth compared to the amount of body roll they eliminate. But body roll is your friend! It makes you look like you're going fast when you're not!

Hey Hondaman, is there anyway you can also post rebound and compression rates for stock and aftermarket shocks as well. Can you also post the recommended shock for each spring and coilover setup so that most people know what they are getting into in terms of ride and save some people buying shocks that are not compatible with some of the stiffer springs listed. Thank you.

Re: Spring Rates Listed Here

I've found out that SRR cup kit rates are 7k/5k and the S1's are 8k/8k (1 kg/cm=56 lbs./in.). You made it known that high spring rates in the rear aren't bad, possibly even desirably, but wouldn't it made the rear more skittish, more prone to swing wide.
I've only heard of using rear rates equal to or higher than front rates in road race or drag situations. Neither of those apps. would care about ride quality, and road racers would actually want a rear end that might get nearly out of control, but would the ride quality and performance be decent for the street, all things being equal? With the S1's, I'd probably want to set my Comptech rear bar to full soft, right?
Please offer any insights you might have.

Re: Spring Rates Listed Here

Bjorn - high performance and streetable comfort cannot co-exist when talking about suspension. One will be sacrificed for the other. You could have a sport setup which would give a balance or both but for me, that's neither here nor there.

If you go with the S1's expect an extremely harsh ride for daily driving. Your car will rattle and things will loosen up over time. And if you start pushing your car on the street, I guarentee you will end up in an accident. Then you can PM me and sell me your car goodies

Remember this, most autoX or road-race circuits are on pretty flat/level ground. The streets are nothing like that. There are potholes, speed bumps and all sorts of weird shit. Street suspension is meant to absorb most of than and help maintain a good contact patch between tire and road.

What does the spring rate tell you about the comfort of the ride? Is it supposed to be as close to the stock ones as possible? I'm confused

**DONOTDELETE**
()
03/12/03 12:02 AM
Re: Spring Rates Listed Here

A lot of comfort has to do with shocks and shock settings as well. Keep in mind comfort is subjective, but lower (closer to stock) spring rates are generally more 'comfy'.

In laymans terms spring rates are listed in pounds per inch, i.e. a 290 lb/in rate spring would take 290 lbs to compress it one inch, and 580 lbs. to compress it two inches etc. Basically the higher the spring rates are the harder the spring is to compress, so the suspension feels more stiff.

I know there are a lot more factors and also wheel rates to take into consideration but I wanted to offer a simple explanation.

slightly softer than ITR's and linear front / progressive rear just like the ITR's. i got CTR springs/shocks and the rear definately looks/feels progressive. the car feels more neutral in turns, and off-throttle oversteer is more apparent

also, on the same site ( http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/6282/modifications.html - halfway down) it says Spoon full coilovers are at 300/240

i dont know much myself, but linear springs should look like most cheaper coilovers... the distance between each coil is more or less the same. with progressive springs, this distance usually changes as you go up/down the spring.

ps- i see on the list above that you excluded 98 ITR's? were they diff spring rates? i know there were no 99s but 98s should have the same spring rates right?

Re: more rates gold-line and Tokico ill kit

With any coilover system, all you adjust is the spring perch height, not the tension. Turning the collar does not compress the spring, the vehicle's weight does that. Whether you set the collar all the way down or all the way up, the spring's tension will remain the same.

linear springs produces a linear feedback. for example, a 300 rated spring dampers the car 300lbs/inch no matter how many incheds the spring troubles.
however, proggresive springs produces more like an exponential feedback, for example, the more the spring compreses the more resistance the spring will make/do.

so basicaly, if you take a turn at 15 mph, a progresive spring will only use 50% of its full rate. but if you make the same turn at 35mph, the spring will use it full rate.
but linear spring use their full rate at all the time, no matter how the spring compreses.

linear springs are more rough for normal driving and pretty stiff in light turns, but you oviously see that progressive springs are more comfy for normal driving and great for cornering as well.

Sofsports have a HIGHER rate than OE sports

FYI

The spring rates given above for the Neuspeed Sofsports VS. the H&R OE Sports is MISLEADING. They are quoted in the first post, with higher rates for the OE Sports. Hondaman, pls. add a comment to the first post.

I've tried them both, and the Sofsports are definitely FIRMER. They have exactly the same wire diameter, overall diameter, and number of coils. HOWEVER, the way they're wound, the Sofsports have more coils bunched up at one end, which close up when the car is at rest. The Sofsports are then left with fewer active coils than the H&R's, so the resulting spring rate is higher. The H&R's at rest have 2 coils almost closed up, while the Sofsports have 4 coils closed completely while at rest. Assuming they use the same metal, that would make the Sofsport spring rates about 20% more than the H&R's. The resulting ride quality confirms the theory.

The Sofsports also sag within a few days by about 0.5", so the resulting lowering is more than advertised, than theh H&R's. The H&R's did not sag.

Which is the better spring? I am NOT a fan of slammed cars because they do NOT handle well on real roads. Ride quality sucks, and they bottom out and skitter and get upset on midcorner bumps. I do track days, autoxes, and canyon carving. Race cars are slammed because racetracks are smooth and they use super firm springs which ride very rough.

Of all the suspension mods on my '97 HX, the springs had the LEAST effect on the handling - the Koni yellows and the ST rear-only swaybar had the greatest effect, then the caster increase, the tires, then the springs last. The Sofsport's ride quality is borderline sucky and did nothing for handling over the H&R OE Sports.

Disclaimer: My HX is not my main "performance" car, it is my daily driver, and I could NOT stand the god-awful dead-fish handling from the factory. (Shame on Honda.. Sentras and Proteges are much more fun-to-drive from the factory without much penalty in comfort)

Re: Spring Rates Listed Here

the rate for teh Tokico Illumina kit is posted up but what car is it for? I figure a civic, but I was wondering if the kit for a 90 crx would be different, I figure it would because of the large weight difference. so... Can someone find that possibly?

Thanks.

For 02+ Civic Si (EP3): ~ Very special thanks to Mike (EXavier) for these!!!
Progress - 280F/500R
Eibach Pro-Kit- 15-20% stiffer then stock
Eibach Sportlines - 20-25% stiffer then stock
Sprint - 20-25% more then stock
H&R Sport - 25-30% more then stock
Tein SS - 336F/448R
Tein Flex - 448F/559R
Tein S. Tech - 157F/291R
We are really in need of finding out what stock rates are for an EP Hatch!!!

If you've got any to add or have springs for me to test let me know and I'll put them on the compression tested and do a full plot of the springs. I'll need one front and one rear spring to test them.

I know that the rear springs on the Ground Control kit are 450, I'm not sure about the front though.

Also I should warn people, if you get the Ground Control Coil-overs for the EP3 specify that you want 6" rear springs, not the 5" crap that they give you off the shelf, they are too short and you don't really have the ability to adjust upwards very much, which leads to a very rough ride around our country's shitty streets.

Can anyone find out the spring rates for the comptech sport springs for the 99-00 civic Si, they lower 1.5

I just spoke with comptech about their spring rates.

265F/140R

The guy told me that they used to have their springs made my eibach but found that there was too much variation in spring rates from set to set. Eibach told them just to use them but comptech wasn't satisfied. Comptech individually tests each and every spring to ensure a matched set. Each spring comes with its own actual spring rate stamped onto the spring. I know alot of you guys will say that the above listed spring rates are too soft but for a guy like me who just drives hard on the street, I want the best comprimise. I've had the prokits for a few years and they just sag too much and they seem a little bouncy. The tech at Comptech said they tested tons of different spring rates and the found that 265F/145R to be the best combination. A little extra info is that the guy said he'd take a 4-2-1 header all day before a 4-1. He said even on a racetrack he'd prefer the 4-2-1 over the 4-1 race header. He said that unless you are "bouncing off the rev limiter" he feels the 4-2-1 is a better header. Sorry for the long post.

Re: Spring Rates Listed Here

Okay, all of this leaves me with silly amounts of questions... I've been reading a lot and have come up with a few good ones that I think are relevant food for thought for anyone trying to adjust their car's setup from what the factory decided was best... First of all, if the front springs on my '99 Si are sitting at a rate of 201 lbs/inch from the factory then going to some of the springs I've seen on here just seems insane. For instance the Tein HT. Why would someone want a spring with that much resistance? Even if you are looking at like a 2+ inch drop with those springs (I'm guessing here...) you are still looking at a very high load rating for those springs. There are probably full size trucks out there with weaker springs! Aside from the question of "What is the perfect spring rate for me?" I have to ask how one goes about choosing a proper shock for their springs? Someone on here asked about listing shock rates, and I have gathered that some shocks have different compression/return rates. Is this where adjustable gas shocks, like the KYB AGX come in? Does adjusting them affect both compression and return rates or just the return rate?(or just the compression rate?) And what is their rated adjustable range? Ahhh! I am actually quite happy with my car's overall handling characteristics and think it is well balanced from the factory. I think that it maybe just needs slightly tweaked for less body roll. Would adjustable shocks alone suit this purpose? I note their seems to be some consensus that the rear springs are too soft. Lowering my car is absolutely not a real option. I live in an area where my stock suspension is already borderline of being too low. I would like to make the car too feel just a bit tighter at the same ride height, with less overall body roll. I am thinking adjustable shocks will fit these requirements, but also wonder if it is possible to make the rear a bit stiffer by taking factory front springs and placing them on the rear? Anyone ever tried this? Thanks in advance for your help...

Re: Spring Rates Listed Here

Here are a couple of good links which will help you understand the difference between a linear and a progressive spring. The pictures say it all...

http://www.bluecoilspring.com/progressive.htm

http://www.bluecoilspring.com/coil-over.htm

Progressive rate springs are basically two or more springs in a single piece, with different rates for different sections of the spring.

Is the ride quality of the Eibach ProKit similar to the H&R OE set for a 96-00 Civic on Koni Special shocks? Also, where does the Eibach kit settle out at? I see that the H&R's don't settle much more after install. I am thinking of putting 16's on my car but not get that slammed look. Just want to make everything look better but still be practical.

I'm wanna get Tein SS with EDFC but i want my car to be lower on the front. Will that effect my handeling? or are the Tein just set with those rates for 00 civic's and cannot be changed.

Re: Spring Rates Listed Here

ok this may be a dumb question: im a running the neuspeed race springs, and they don't feel nearly as firm as my old coilovers... around 400 front and 380 in the rear. Do the spring length affect this? the race sorings are extremely short because the dump the car. Any info on this im planning to upgrader to GC's with rates of 400 front and 450 rear... i don't want these to be softer than my current setup....

Re: Spring Rates Listed Here

Neuspeed Race is a progressive spring, meaning it gets progressively firmer where as the springs in both your old coilovers and GC are Linear springs, so they are the rate throughout the length.

400/450 will be much stiffer then the Neuspeed Race as GC is linear and Nuespeed Race is progressive.

Are you referring to the spring rate? It's because of the different suspension design after 2000. In the newer MacPherson strut designs, the spring is directly translated to the motion of the wheel. On the older double wishbone design, the spring is acting on the lower control arm about 2/3 of the way out. This means that the spring's motion ratio in relation to the wheel is actually 2/3 of it's actual rate.

For example, on a MacPherson design, a 300in/lb spring is putting down 300in/lb of pressure to the contact patch. While on a double wishbone, a 300in/lb spring is actually putting less, approx. 200in/lb to the contact patch in this case.

That's why the newer cars have a numerically lower spring rate, but comparable wheel rates.

Actually, adjustable, or higher performance shocks will not decrease body roll. It will react quicker to weight transfer giving the impresson of less body roll, but is really decreasing the response time between input and weight transfer.

Also, on most single-adjustable shocks, the adjustment affects more dramatically on the rebound side and slightly on the compresson side.

I think the best real world solution for you is finding a set of OEM ITR springs and a set of non-adjustable sport shocks. Or adjustables if you can stretch the budget a bit. I have been using this setup with Illuminas and been very happy with the compromise. And if you still feel the need to control body roll, a set of swaybars will be your next step.

I thought I'd add this since I didn't see it.

Omnipower Street
(10 kg/mm front & 8 kg/mm rear) = (559 lbs/in front & 447 lbs/in rear)

Omnipower Sport
(12 kg/mm front & 10 kg/mm rear) = (671 lbs/in front & 559 lbs/in rear)
