We just returned from our 2-week honeymoon. Went to Africa We ended up 'slumming' it in Kenya doing a 'safari', and Seychelles for some sun & sand. 1) The flight - We have access to 'Priority Pass' lounges, so the peasant life wasn't that bad, until we got on the plane: Ethiopian Airlines. 13 hrs Then transfer to another plane for another 2-3 hrs to Nairobi. 2) Stayover - Stayed a night in Nairobi, before boarding a smaller (20-person) plane to the camp. Nairobi is shady as fuck. 3) Amboseli National Park, and &Beyond - We first went to Amboseli National Park, for 2 days. In awe and shock at seeing zebras 'n shit in the wild, taking photos like mad. We didn't realize what we were missing until we went to our second basecamp, &Beyond - animals were 3-10x times closer... - &Beyond was our 'basecamp' ... Tap water was yellow. No AC. Service was opulent ... holy fuck. Place was nice. - Did a 60 min hot air balloon ride first thing in the morning -- expensive as fuck, great experience (first time in balloon.) - Animals were.... unbelievable ... It's basically Pokemon IRL. You sit back, wait for your driver to 'hunt down/find' a pokemon, then you whip out your phone/camera and 'shoot/catch' it. Amboseli National Park, &Beyond camp: https://www.andbeyond.com/our-lodges/afr...bo-tented-camp/ 4) Seychelles - Island east of Africa, there's no 'local' food, or even 'local' people per se. Fucking RHD cars, with huge open sewer ditch on the left. Driving was kinda fucked. - We saw some Koreans slumming it by the pool with ramen they bought from the local supermarket, and eating boiled eggs they lifted from the (included buffet) breakfast. Question: Has anyone gone through African Lion Safari? I'm considering giving my parents the peasant African experience ... If anyone can direct me to an anon vid-hosting site, I'll host a vid. I don't do photos, I do video. As there's no easy way to 'cut/black circle' all the personal stuff/faces from the vids, I pretty much need to create one from scratch. It'll take awhile. Gimme 1-2 days. Only the best quality for CSI:On, no shaky Michael J Fox shit here. Originally Posted By: Risky Business Nice man, that's cool you did something different. So how did the whole Africa thing come about as a honeymoon? Have you guys been everywhere else already? Wanted to do something different, etc? It's cool that the wife is down for adventures like that. |

i'd love to do africa. my folks leave for tanzania (the huge crater+kilimajaro) around labour day. should be epic. nice pacakge they got as well, i forget the name of the tour operator but they're decent and pricing wasn't to bad (you can upgrade for more money if desired). |

Here's a quick video I drafted up: https://streamable.com/d96uq ... Warning that it's just under 4 mins, and a rough cut. Africa is the wife's 'dream' vacation. We didn't do much of any snorkeling, diving, etc - We've been to Chicago for a 3-Michelin star restaurant, Alinea. - Barcelona (1-Michelin star 'Moments' in Mandarin Oriental Hotel) and Canary Islands. The personal vids I did were ~7-10 hrs in the making (4-5 vids, 1 hr first draft, 30-45 mins tweaking), so they're not as dizzying as the CSI:ON Edition vid ... I used iPhone 6 Plus (built-in optical stabilization, but only 1x zoom) + DJI Osmo Mobile stabilizer. iMovie for editing. I dunno... Africa is nowhere in my Top 10 list of places to visit. Then again, I'm not much of a world traveler. The whole 'safari' thing I've always felt as an 'old retired white couple' or 'rich white family' thing to do. I enjoyed the video stuff I got to do... with animals/scenery as subjects, it provided much content for me to work with. Temps in Africa were wild: 13C-23C. Freezing my balls off in the morning as I shower in an area open to the outside, hot as hell during the day in the sun, but beautiful in the shade, little to no mosquitos. Seychelles wasn't as bad-ass as it could have been, as the food wasn't 'unique', and the shitty car on shitty roads didn't add to the experience. I'll tell you though... Your African *safari* experience, should you decide to try it, differs wildly. I was with the &Beyond crew, and our naturist/guide was phenomenal. We got some of the BEST shots out of everyone there, he got closer to the animals than any of the other groups. He even told us later that the 'customer interaction experience' is much more intense with &Beyond than with other places he's worked. I noticed the other 'drivers' would 'follow' other cars, drive up, then sit there. There was a point during the trip (labelled 'OMG DAT VIEW!' in the video), where I was sitting in the 3rd row of the open safari truck, elevated, and I had this wraparound view of the world going by. Holy shit, it just felt surreal, like I was in a virtual world.... |

Did you smoke up before the tour? Would explain the view lol |

I didn't find it dizzy at all. |

I brought a mirrorless DSLR, a GoPro, and my iPhone + stabilizer. I also asked the Kenyan High Commission re: drones -- don't do it. - The DSLR had challenges taking solid photos ... 60% of them were fuzzy as fuck. - The GoPro, I didn't even bother. - Had I got a drone, it would have bugged the fuck out of the animals, logistics would have been a pain. - the iPhone had issues in low-light and night shots -- I wish I used the wife's iPhone 7 Plus instead of my 6 Plus. I'd post my more-polished 'personal' vids, but the stalkers here tell me otherwise. The CSI:On edition vid did have 80% of the shots in the other vids, just not polished. Mavic pro is super portable. Too bad so many places ban drones. I'm heading off to Maui next month and I'm bringing it. Just can't fly in national parks so should be fine. Also bringing my GP5 and karma grip. Got 2 weeks there to make lots of videos and pics lol |

Would love to see vids of Maui. Saw a handful of people taking photos and vids using their GoPro Session, and I was like... who dafuq is gonna watch that shit; gonna be like Michael J Fox did a video. My DJI Osmo Mobile's motors got kinda fucked/kinked halfway thru the vacation ... it's kinda stiff on 1 axis, so do take care of the Karma Grip... re: selfie stick if you're into that kinda stuff.... The GoPro foldable selfie stick is fucking MINT. Worth every penny, especially if you buy the $35 knock-off one from PacMall I frankenstein'd it with a BestBuy in-house branded selfie stick's phone clamp and BT remote. re: drone, this was the response I got: Quote: The regulations regarding this matter are still being developed in Kenya and if you carry your drone, it is likely to be seized at the port of entry and returned to you on your return. It is advisable that you use other means to take the photographs and enjoy the vacation in Kenya. Ixxxx Kxxxxx Kenya High Commission |
