asphalt sealing?

Anyone seal their asphalt driveways? <inb4onlypeasantshaveasphalt>

I've seen some of the neighbours that have a town home do it, and OMG, in those situations, man does it look ugly, i.e. they share a driveway and only one side is sealed.

I see they pretty much just bought a bug tub of the goo, extension pole and a roller, and went at it... with regular painters tape to protect some areas.

An fb ad just popped up with someone offered to do it for double-car garage driveway for only $120 ...

Thots? On whether to seal, and DIY vs pay?

On another note, I always planned on sealing the concrete in the garage, but never got around to it... In the winter, I just place a monster tarp on the floor to reduce the amount of salt/dirt ...

Re: asphalt sealing?

Don't waste your time. Ask yourself this question, does the maintenance crew ever seal their asphalt roads or the provincial highways or the runways at the airport or at the race track? Sure it looks nice, but it'll age the asphalt much faster and it'll be a tad bit more slicker when wet. My parents are still on their original asphalt driveway from 1981 and it's grey as F, it has held up quite well considering the age and it never saw the sealer.

Good Ol' FB creeping I don't know much about asphalt sealing but I question the quality of the product for only $120. But then again maybe the product is only $30 a tub. Is that good, cheap ... I don't know.

They probably used better products back then.

I sealed my own driveway once (3 years ago?) and it looked great for about 1-2 years -- but now it's back to what it was before; then again the product did say you're supposed to seal it once every 3 years.

I used the Crappy Tire airport grade sealer (it was on sale) -before that I "prepped" it (as per instruction) by washing my driveway with this driveway detergent [same brand as the sealer] (to get rid of any oil drips and surface contaminants), then sealed each crack with several tubes of liquid tar / caulking type.

Took a couple of days but all the cracks were sealed -- the only thing is the caulking will remain so it looks like you have these flat black worms permanently on your driveway even after the sealant; but so far, no major new cracks appear.

Our house is 20 years old and the previous owner never sealed it once. If I invest to get a new asphalt driveway, I will be doing the sealing thing regularly.

My neighbour went for the $120 special - a couple of Russia guys were going house to house asking if we need a spray - they literally sprayed some shiny black shit on (one coat) and you can still see the existing cracks - a couple of heavy rain storm and their shiny black driveway was back to what it was.

Re: asphalt sealing?

what about those people (kids mainly) who come around and do your driveway for $80 or whatever? they pretty much paint the entire thing black as fuck. my brother got it done two years ago, seems to hold up but i remember washing his truck on it and almost slipping and busting my ass on it.

i thought about getting it done, but of course my poor ass neighbour won't do it, just like my roof, looks all nice and new and then a line and her broken roof

Tar over your side ... then when dried, tar over again with a small brush with "CHEAP FUCK --> "

Re: asphalt sealing?

The smell alone makes me not want to do it myself. Pay someone $$ to lessen their life.

On another note, have you tried to do that for your car in the winter? Cut out some slots for windows, you are golden.
