Throughout this year though, if you are a Toronto driver, you'll notice photo radar cameras a lot more frequently considering the city is planning to install cameras in more than 700 locations as part of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE). The expansion is in correlation with last year's creation of 754 Community Safety Zones around schools.

The cameras are reportedly going to be installed predominantly in Community Safety Zones, meaning around schools other neighbourhoods that have reduced speed limits. What this means is that if a camera does catch you speeding, not only are you getting a ticket, but the fine is automatically doubled due to speeding in a safety zone.

Fines could range from $21 for going one km/h over the posted speed limit to $1,105-plus for 50 km/h or more.

Cost of Speed in Community Safety Zones
15 km/h over speed limit: $115, 0 demerit points
20 km/h over speed limit: $220, 3 demerit points
30 km/h over speed limit: $520, 3 demerit points
35 km/h over speed limit: $605, 4 demerit points
50 km/h over speed limit: $1,105, 6 demerit points

FYI: No demerit points if caught by photo radar, ticket paid

There are many cameras setup throughout the City already, but many of them don't work or are not activated. I remember hearing something about it being costly and the cameras within the boxes get moved from location to location. I wonder if thats the plan this time. 700 boxes seems like a lot. I wonder if the actual number of working/activated ones will be a lot less and this is more of a deterrent (ie scare tactic).

Police say between Monday and Sunday, officers charged 670 drivers.
