I tried avoiding Amazon

Fridge stopped working and I traced it back to either the relay and/or capacitor. Called around a number of local places and the one place I did locate the parts they wouldn't sell to the public only contractors. I then went to Amre Supply. They had both parts for $65 each. Again I was willing to keep the business local, however they wouldn't give me the option of returning the parts if they weren't the actual problem.

So I decided to take my chances with Amazon, even if they didn't allow me to return them I'd rather eat $40 vs $130 (quite the price difference)

In the end it worked and fridge was repaired

Re: I tried avoiding Amazon

really? I've had some good experience at https://www.reliableparts.ca/ ... Their site has good schematics, and photos of the parts usually as well...

Fixed a worn bearing on the convection fan in the Samsung stove oven thing ... and a temp probe sensor for a Samsung DW.

Wasn't so lucky on some spare DW parts for the broken tabs on the utensil basket though.

Re: I tried avoiding Amazon

Thanks for the link I'll make sure to consider them going forward. It looks like they have the parts for $83 and $64

It should be noted that both Amre and ReliableParts are probably pricing OEM which would explain the higher cost.

Re: I tried avoiding Amazon

cudos

I agree with what you did. Id support local business but they have to give me a reason to do so. Even if prices were a bit higher if they worked with me on a refund etc if it didn't work I rather get it same day and build a relationship with the company.

Re: I tried avoiding Amazon

On the topic of parts and local suppliers... furnace filters...

I used to order 16x25x4 MERV11 furnace filters on Amazon.ca, from a shop called United Filter. 4 for $79.99, free shipping.

Found out they're local in Mississauga @ http://www.unitedfilter.com ... they sell the same for $65 with free pickup or shipping.

Whether they're as good as the 3M or other Home Depot brands ... but, I've been using them for a year.

I used to pick up filters from them but they moved farther away from me.
They also take cash, no tax.

Re: I tried avoiding Amazon

Does anyone have a (local) hookup for fridge water filters? I need 'special' ones with a chip in it: GE RPWFE Refrigerator Water Filter (Replaces Model RPWF)

I have about 10 days before it says fuck you and shuts off the water... (Amazon won't get it here in time ... ETA March 7) Home Depot/Crappy Tire doesn't exist.

Re: I tried avoiding Amazon

buy from an US re-seller w/ free shipping to an US cross border address? That's what I would do.

Driving to and crossing the border for a fridge filter? F that.

Fridge will shut water off in 10 days? Feb 16 + 10 = Feb 26.

So basically you'll have a week of either drinking tap water or bottled water. Go grab a couple of big jugs from the grocery store and you're good until the Amazon order arrives.

you don't cross the border in the US. The company (Cross Border) will accept the shipment and bring it across the border for you for a fee.

Re: I tried avoiding Amazon

This is interesting.
So I just signed up... and they gave me an address.

I'm assuming it's as easy as me putting that as my shipping address, and then once the product arrives there, I'll get notified and charged to proceed with bringing it over the border?

And from what I see, there's a pick up location at Woodbine and Steeles.

Lots of stuff. Many US places charge an arm and a leg for shipping to Canada or some won't ship to Canada at all. For example, look into OEM parts in the US w free shipping and compare that to the Canadian dealer pricing.

Yep, but I usually ship a bunch of stuff to my US address and then I inform CBU to bring my items across the border as soon as Im done shopping. I try not to order 1 item and bring it across the border. It's a bit more cost effective to bring stuff across in bulk in my experience.

Re: I tried avoiding Amazon

I use Crossborderpickups all the time. Have been for the past 3-4 years. It's great.

The best part is I'm usually responsible for declaring the value of the items

I just used Cross Border Pickups for the first time.
The package arrives at the American address tomorrow.
Eager to see how seamlessly this all works.

Re: I tried avoiding Amazon

Make sure you keep an eye out on when the item is received, you have to manually tell them to ship it into Canada. First time I used it I didn't realize it and it sat for weeks until I clicked a button. The reason it's manual is they wait to see if you have other packages coming so you can bundle them all at once to come in to the GTA location.

yep, cost effective this way to bundle the shipment to bring across the border.

No, I'd get it installed at a tireshop in Buffalo.

Otherwise Tires23 pricing is pretty competitive.
