Educate me on RSUs (stock rewards)

Long story short, small (Canadian) company I work for got acquired by a big US company, and awarded me with $xxx in US stock, vesting over 3 yrs (1/3 a year)

Last year, 1/3 got vested. At time of vesting, about 50% of the stock got SOLD. (Checked with some colleagues, and they also got raped.)

I called the broker (Charles Schwab) to see if I forgot some fucking form, etc. They said nope, unfortunately your employer determines how much gets set aside for taxes, bonuses etc. Then told me same rapage will happen at the next 2 vests

I asked if it was the W8BEN or some other form I forgot to fill out .... said nope. I recall clicking a setting that did ask me whether to 'Sell shares to pay for taxes/etc, OR I pay out of pocket' ... but FFS ... 50%+???

This can't be fucking normal .... wtf is going on?

Re: Educate me on RSUs (stock rewards)

You are going to get the difference back between what they took and your effective rate, like a bonus. You get taxed at 50% or whatever, but if your effective rate is 35% you get the 15% difference when you file your return.
