How bad does your exhaust pop when letting off/coasting?
|
My Z is pretty bad with a 3" straight pipe...everytime I let off or coast down a hill, I get the pop/backfire from the exhaust. lol
Now is that noise strictly due to the straight pipe and all of that shit not being caught in the cat? Or is that more to do with exhaust size/running rich?

You're also still drawing fuel through your engine, right? Modern efi cars completely cut out fuel when you coast.

The accents crackled and popped like rice crispies. The civic did it every once in a while. The tacoma is pretty quiet lol.

every LT1 car i've ever had does this. While its a sound you get used to its still strange, especially when an automatic does it.

Seems to be more muffler design than anything else. I just changed a rear section kit (Borla) and that made the car pop and gurgle all the time.

my civic does it sometimes on the highway when i let off the gas, like a big pop. but its just random when it will do it.
it also does it under very light throttle.

My tune is setup for 11:1 A/F at WOT i higher RPM's and I got a pops alot when I was catless with straight through mufflers (1 resonator). Its more or less running slightly rich/open exhaust.

The quad4 does this really bad. It seems to go on forever if im in a high gear and doing only like 30-40mph. But every time i lift of the gas at any speed it get atleast one pop.Its done this from the moment i had a cat back, and even worse when the cat was removed.

No popping, but when I'm into the boost and let of quick, the vanes in the VNT15 open quick and give a nice little whistle. Sounds great, especially with no muffler.

My C5 does it,it's got the Z06 Ti exhaust. I love it,I try to make it do it. It's got the LG Pro longtubes,with his X pipe. It's pretty loud when it does it.
I thought it from was unburnt fuel when you chop the throttle,too tired to think about it much.

if I'm cruising around zero-vacuum, it'll pop a fireball or two.
this is likely a product of a speed/density setup over a metered-air.

And by the way Mikey,I love your car.When I was just out of high school I had a 5.0 with a blower,r-cmpnds,Koni yellows,etc.,and went up to a time trial on an old airport. On the way there I saw this beautiful white 240 with slicks. Really clean and simple looking car. I gave the dude a thumbs up. At the time trial,I was all over the course,trying to keep it straight and to keep the car from overheating. I went and talked to the guy with a Z,and it was the original motor,but had sidedrafts on it,a cam and compression. His time was alot faster than mine. Ive wanted one ever since.

it's just afterfire...and it's just hilariously fun
with the wrx I had a 3" catless exhaust with a relatively straight through muffler (no baffles). I'd throw a little flame here and there, and pop a bit once I got the exhaust nice and hot.
with the sti I've had several exhausts and the amount of popping does have something to do with your catback. more restrictive catbacks tend to keep it from popping as much--before anyone says anything, my downpipes and catbacks have always been kinda thin-walled, so you'd hear if it was popping and not making it to the muffler.
just coasting, i only pop in first gear coasting down to a stop. I've thrown a little fire at WOT shifts, but so have most people here

Every time i lift i poop a fireball in the Miata.
No issues on upshifts, just steady-state throttle and lift/decel.
Setup is MAP emulating MAF on a piggyback, header, testpipe, 2.25" Racing Beat exhaust that i think is mostly worn out.

Mine does it. I can get rid of the popping by raising the MAP cutoff number so that it kills the fuel injectors at a higher manifold pressure. It sounds like a completely normal car if I raise the value high enough. And this is a car with nothing between the turbine outlet and the rear bumper other than unmuffled 3" pipes.

You're popping because of the carburetors. They don't have the ability to shut themselves off at very high levels of vacuum like on a car with an ECU. The mixture isn't dense enough to be set off by the spark in a timely manner so it combusts in the exhaust.

My SRT-4 used to burble until a certain RPM, then the injectors would shut off and it would stop.

My GLHS would throw flames 2-3 feet out at high rpm when it was cold outside(below 60F). At lower rpms it would burble and pop a couple times.

My old Formula was an automatic, but I used to hold it in gear or downshift manually on a regular basis (stock programming was kinda dumb). If I let off from about half throttle in second gear, I'd get a very nice pop and burble as the engine braking took hold. It was especially prevalent when the cutout was open. I liked it.

not to much burbling lol n/a Si. but it does pop a lot going from on an off the throttle. sometimes ill tap the gas on purpose just to hear it pop lol bored.
my evo muffler is blown so its way louder than its ever been.

hell my cobalt will burble and pop on occasion bone stock. of course, it's not loud at all. Can pretty much only hear it if I'm next to a wall or something like that to reflect the sound. Caught me off guard the first time I heard it because it's a bone stock, full-OEM exhaust n/a engine.
The bike is carb'd and has a 4-1 aftermarket header with a fairly straight-thru muffler so it'll pop quite a bit but only when decelerating at higher rpms (5-6k+), below that it doesn't do it at all.
I'm still baffled by the cobalt doing it. Also does it if I blip the throttle and let the clutch out a bit to move a small distance, like in a drive thru (which makes it easy to hear b/c of the sound bouncing off taco bell). Very odd.

I guess I am not blessed with the Evo. The only time I get it to pop/burble/fireball is when I use the no lift to shift hear redline or if I shift at 7500, other than that the exhaust is very uneventful for a 3 inch catless. I still say the best mod so far was the NLTS, its great being able to hold boost during shifts and get a nice pop pop pop while you to it.

The MR2 on the other hand pops like a mofo, but it is running an open downpipe right now. Its kinda nice to hear the turbo start to spool at 1700rpm.
