Pictures of my new daily driver, a Pontiac G5 GT

I just picked up my new black/ebony leather G5 GT on Monday night. It's the sister car to the Chevy Cobalt SS [non-supercharged model]. I got it fully loaded for just a hair over $22k out the door. I got the heated leather seats, sunroof, Pioneer 7-speaker stereo, 6-disc in-dash cd-player, side curtain airbags, free 1-year of OnStar, free 3-months of XM radio, foglights, and the remote start. I love this car, it's leaps and bounds beyond the Sunfire/Cavalier it replaced. It drives really smooth and has good power with the 2.4 Ecotec. I can easily pass on the highways, and merge in traffic. It handle really good, and takes bumps and potholes no problem. Gives great space in the cockpit, I even had to move my seat up. Lots of trunk space. Gets pretty good gas milage, 25city and 32highway. All around great car, and I'm glad I got it over any other car in it's price/power range. And I'm loving the free 3-months of XM radio.

Now for the pictures. Excuse the mess, it rained and snowed for the past couple of days here in Ohio.

Re: Pictures of my new daily driver, a Pontiac G5 GT

$6k less gets you the base model with the 148hp 2.2 Ecotec and hardly any options [like heated seats, mp3 cd-player, ect]. The 2.4 Ecotec has 173hp/163tq compared to the 2.2. I would have gotten the 5-speed, but I have a history of foot pain in my left foot from time to time, and it would be hard to drive a stick with that.

Sorry, but 22K is a freaking HUGE! ripoff. Sign me up for a VW GTi or a Civic Si for that price or better yet, a Mazdaspeed 3. For less money, I'd take a Mazda 3 Sport.

You could also do some smart shopping for an Altima or WRX.

Yeah, but he didn't buy it in Canada.

And it still sucks compare to the competition. Shit, for 22k, Why not just get the Supercharged Cobalt ? This whole purchase wreaks of paying sticker price for a pseudo J body, which is unheard of.

I'm not going to be nice on this purchase. It's a huge ripoff.

Ive had my celica for 5yrs(now paid off woot) and my Spec-v for 4yrs, so i dont sell my cars every few years. But when you buy a GM, you arent exactly buying a quality care(granted the colbalt/G5 maybe better than the Jbody), but 22k for what you got in that car is a COMPLETE ripoff.

Here is a Cobalt SS supercharged for just over $21,000:

Bigger than a Mk4 Jetta's back seat.

I can fit a child seat behind me (with less than an inch to spare and I am 6 feet tall). I can also fit back there. So while it is small, I would not call it retardedly small.

It's no bigger than an RX8, which is much better packaged. A sedan with sucky backseats makes no sense IMO. IIRC I'd prefer a Civic hatch or Focus hatch backseat for room to the Jetta and WRX.

Maybe his justafication was that.
A.He got Heated Leather
B.Cool Wheels
C.An Automatic
D.XM radio
E.A Wing
F. His Own sense Of Pride In Ownership.

If you read his post he says 22K OUT THE DOOR.(Thats After Tax In My Book)

So he payed apprx $20500.00 For this car....Right?

How much would he pay for say an 07' Base model Civic SI?

More than that right?

Would he get Leather?

Or an Automatic?

For 22K OUT THE DOOR?

So maybe we all wouldnt pick this car...

Maybe I wouldnt pick this car....

But my local Honda dealer has an 07' Civic EX with an Automatic....Its over 20K

Did he really do that bad?

And maybe he likes Pontiacs?

First time I've ever seen one of those.....

That thing would actually be HOT with the SC and a Stick Shifter.

And with his injured foot and desire for better fuel economy?

Thank you Chazmanian and everyone else that didn't ridicule my car.

1. I like Pontiac's.
2. I don't like Volkswagen's, other then a 1stgen GTI. I think they're all overpriced girls cars. Especially when it comes to aftermarket parts and maintenance.
3. You guys try driving a stick with foot pains.
4. I don't like the look of the new Civic's other then the Si model. But the Si is over 22k.
5. 22k was OUT THE DOOR price. After taxes, title, and all of those other fees you have to pay.
6. The 2.4l Ecotec makes something a lot of other imports don't, torque. 163ft/lbs of it.
7. I don't have a need to buy a large car like a Maxima, or the money.
8. Not a big fan of the WRX, except for the STi model, and I'm sure that's over 22k new.
9. How many other cars can you get FULLY LOADED for under 22k?
10. I like my new car, it's not fast, but I have my Firebird Formula if I want to drive fast.
11. I think the Mazda 3 is ugly and I didn't want a station wagon. I could have gotten a new Vibe AWD that gets 30mpg city if I wanted a wagon.

1. GM is glad at least 1 person does
2. Goodluck finding aftermarket for a NON-LSX GM
3. ALot of cars come in automatic now, that are better than that
4. New Civic is overpriced also, Honda just finally realized they can capitalize on fanboys
5. alot better car than that, its called HAGGLING, obviously something you dont know how to do.
6. wow torque.. whoopy i make more torque than you so ha. other imports seem to do fine with less torque.. oh wait thats cuz they have better gearing than most NA counterparts.
7. you just paid 22 fucking K for a near bottom line GM model. You couldve gotten alot better car for that amount.
8. ok

To be honest I'm not sure I'd pay that much for the SC model, after having owned the car for 3 months. It's not a bad car at all, but you'd probably have all the torque and what not you'd need with a 2.2L 5 speed.

Different strokes for different folks, hope you like the car!

Congrats on getting the car you wanted. If you are willing to pay X number of dollars, then the price doesn't matter. Bang for the buck doesn't matter either.

It sickens me when somebody wants to share something they are happy about and people roll in with their import fanboi and better-than-thou mentality and rips people apart for buying "dumbestic" "crappy GM" cars, complains that it isn't the fastest or best handling car for the money etc and when performance doesn't matter, they become metrosexual dashboard rapists. They should be happy you found something you like and wanted to tell about it.

FWIW last time I priced a new GTI it came to about 27k and a new Si was north of 25k
For a daily driver, the pontiac costs less, the ecotec is a nice engine and the parts to maintain it would be cheaper than the competition.

even my 98 GTI was about 25k new.

I don't follow. How often do you have someone in your back seat? I have a 3 month old... so I don't see him out growing it in the near future. Maybe when he is... like 14. I could see it being a problem if I carted around 10 mexicans everywhere I drove or something but I don't

I can fit back there just fine and I am 6 feet tall... though I wouldn't want to be back there for more than an hour or so. If I need a big back seat, I take the wifes Accord.

And the RX8 is more expensive and a PITA as you have to open the front door to open the back (like if you are dropping someone off). Don't get me wrong, I like the RX8 but I needed/wanted a hatch.

Scion TC. 160hp/155-160tq stock. Pretty sure its a 2.4. You might even be able to get one with the TRD supercharger for less than $22k out the door.

or buy a 2.4 auto Cobalt for $17k (although they sell for cheaper than that where I live), wheels for $1k, swing by Best Buy for XM/Sirius satellite radio, buy a G5 grille on ebay and slap that bish on, and save the other $3.5k.

I listed about 5 in my post, nice job ignoring it though to back the new Sunfire.

Also, nice job twisting 22k out the door to 20,500. The price of the cars I buy "out the door" is car's price.

And don't pretend like adding up lame options in some shit combo makes it a good buy. OMG he got an automatic with XM radio and DEXCOOL! Find some other car to do that for 20,500 minus 1500 but the 1500 doesn't count.

For the $20,500 he paid for that car?

His 22K statement was out the door right?

Using 7% which is the typical sales tax rate. He paid 20.5K Pre-Tax.

Can anyone think of a new car with those options, In fairly legit GT mode due to having more than 125HP.....

With Wheels and an Automatic and Leather?

And Y'all are bashing the guy?

I thought this was a SI Vs All forum?

Maybe a good response to this thread would be to.
A.Post a photo of your car
B.Post how much it cost you
C.Prepare to be Bashed and spat on regardless of what you bought or paid for it.

Yes?

Thats not that hard. A mazda3 s grand touring with a auto is 21k msrp. It could easily be had for less than 20k.

A 98 GTI wasn't 25k either. Maybe 22k if you were dumb enough to pay full sticker. My 97 GTI loaded stickered 20,990

Not hardly.

I've driven cavs and sunfires, and having driven and now owning the cobalt, I can say these vehicles are head and shoulders above the J-bodies. When I test drove the cobalt, I honestly expected to be turned off by the lack of build quality inherent to the J's. But honestly the quality of the build of the car is amazing, head and shoulders above the cav/sunfire twins. I'd dare say it was as well put together as a few toyotas/hondas that i've driven

I didnt recall seeing any post where anyone including yourself put up "Five"? cars brand new with leather, Automatic, XM radio, Wing and wheels.

Acura RSX with same options:

Total as Configured: $23,364.00*
Destination: $670.00
16" Machined Finished 7-Spoke Aluminum Alloy Wheel $860.00
Rear Wing Spoiler $359.00
*Prices shown do not include taxes, license, and registration. Actual cost may vary. Dealers set their own prices.
MSRP excluding tax, license, registration, $670.00 destination charge and options. Dealer prices may vary.

Ummmmm. Little higher than 22K out the door.

Scion:
Pushing 20K "Sans" the leather but close...Very Close.

The point I'm trying to make is that its not so easy to find a car with those options in that price range.

Post your whatever it is and it would be just as easy if not easier to attack and ridicule.

Take some pictures of your ride along with what you paid for it out the door....

See if you dont catch some "Heat"

Look I drive a 2006 TRD Tacoma Sport 4x4. I'm not in any way shape or form ashamed of my truck or what I paid for it.

Damned site wont let me post photos...WTF?

$28,300 Out the "Door". I'm in the market for a small "Sporty"? car to replace my wifeys 5 year old BMW.

And no she dosent want a Subaroo-Forrester. Or a Pontiac G5. Or the soon to be discontinued RSX.

Both of which are great choices...To somebody at some point in their car buying lives!

It will probably be a new Civic SI or god forbid the GTI she has begun "Lobbying" for.

Whatever it is I'm sure someone on this forum could.
A.Do way Better
B.Save way more money
C.Go so very much faster
D.Get way more chicks in the process
E.Sleep so much better at night due to their "Enhanced" car buying skills.
F.Get way more compliments in assorted Burger King and Wal-Mart parking lots.

Right?

In a perfect world would we all just be issued 4 door Corolla's? You could pick Black or White. If you are over 40 or have a disability you are eligable for an automatic tranny?

You drive it for 220K and turn it in at which time the entire vehicle is recycled and prepared to begin life anew?

We live in a far from perfect world...Thats why they build Subaroo Forresters and god help us now Pontiac G5's.

Go figure Huh?

Why do you keep pointing out these crappy features like it's some kind of revolution that GM introduced them as an option to their base model vehicle? Furthermore, "cool" wheels and a wing on a Pontiac are nothing to get tight-in-the-pants over, you dolt!

That stuff comes standard on most cars these days and for well under ~$22K OTD. I mean, fuck...even a used LGT is like 3 trillion times better than that heap and it comes with all those "deal braking" features you keep mentioning + Navi. Not a 2 door, but granted, all this bitching about rear seat room might as well lead you to buy something with more doors.

It's not like he's making some huge trade-off in power or handling, etc. when stepping up to a 4 door <anything> in comparison.

Regardless, I'm not flaming him, and I doubt anyone else here cares that much about what he does/doesn't do with his money, but the market right now is EXTREMELY saturated with cars that are head and shoulders above his decision so we're all just trying to figure out "Why?"

Re: Pictures of my new daily driver, a Pontiac G5 GT

I went to other dealers, all the dealers are down the road from the Pontiac dealer. I looked at VW, didn't care for anything. Looked at Mazda, didn't want a Mazda 3 wagon. Looked at Scion, the G5 has more interior room. Looked at Nissan, the new Sentra is an insult to the phrase "butt ugly". Didn't want a Neon or a Focus. Honda Civic's aren't my taste and didn't want to be just another Honda fanboy and couldn't afford an Si model. The new Eclipse is hideous on the outside and inside, has nice power though. The RSX is probably just as fast as the G5 in auto form. Toyota didn't have anything, and didn't want a Camry or Corolla. Hyundai has the Tiburon, but the V6 engine makes the same horsepower as the 2.4 Ecotec.

And if I was looking at used cars, there are tons I could have bought at 20k used. But you people still would have bitched and complained unless it was a godly Civic Si or Subaru WRX.

And for what it's worth, all G5's [base, GT] come with the rear spoiler standard.

Saturn Sky Invoice = 23k
Saturn Sky MSRP = 24,595 ..
With TTL, you'd be looking at just over $27k OTD.

To get a sky for 22k out the door, you'd have to get the dealer to come down about $5k off the MSRP. They'd be selling the car for a couple thousand under invoice. I guess it's possible, but it would take some good haggling.

I don't understand why you STILL think that sticker price is the end-all-be-all when it comes to purchasing ANY of the vehicles that you just listed.

$24K for an almost base Civic? Of course GM is going to give you the highest number they can possibly find when it comes to the competetion (or any car maker, for the matter). We're on a Civic Si website for fucks sake, and 10 more seconds of research on THIS board would have told you that people are paying ~$21,500 OTD for their Si's. No one said to buy one of those instead, but if that hasn't shown that you got ripped, nothing will

You must be a salesman's best friend the moment you step foot on the lot

bingo. either rebates or free money in the form of 0% apr.
The OP got hosed because depreciation is going to own him to the tune of 50% of what he paid in less than two years
Sure he may keep it longer and not care, but say the car gets totaled....hope he has GAP.
GM is in no position to sell that thing for over 20k, but the OP proves that to be not so true
The scion TC is roomy as hell in the back and even has reclining rear seat backs. Decent power and can be had with all those options for thousands less as a base goes for 17k or so.
Civic ex coupe can be had for invoice nowadays and comes loaded sans leather.
The resale on any used car sux, but is extra sucky for GM models..all of them except the vette. Hell, he could've scored a low mileage GTO for less coin

The Rabbit is closer in spec and intent to the G5 than the GTI imo. You can get a better equiped Rabbit (with whats aparently the best automatic ever in the DSG) for under $20k and still have room for the dealer accessory guy to rape you for installing leather. And thats MSRP. Or you could get a GTI for about $22k with package 1 with the DSG if you're patient. I know I had several base GTI's offered to me for $200-300 under MSRP when I was shopping.

Corolla LE 4-Speed Automatic
Base Price:* $16,215

I love this car, it's leaps and bounds beyond the Sunfire/Cavalier it replaced. It drives really smooth and has good power with the 2.4 Ecotec. I can easily pass on the highways, and merge in traffic. It handle really good, and takes bumps and potholes no problem. Gives great space in the cockpit, I even had to move my seat up. Lots of trunk space. Gets pretty good gas milage, 25city and 32highway. All around great car, and I'm glad I got it over any other car in it's price/power range. I don't think so! There are much better choices out there when it comes to bang for the buck. Even if he paid a fair price (when I don't think he really did) it was a poor choice for a so called enthusiast (he is posting in SVA). The thing is what, a low 16 sec car at best? Here is a time... looks like a mid 16 sec car:

Im looking at the G5 there and it looks kinda sporty. Nice wheels, good power, good interior, etc. With all the options, seems like it'd be a nice car to daily drive. Unfortunatley, it's gonna be hard for people to see past the "Pontiac" badge.

And anyone getting a Civic Si for 21.5k out the door is the world's greatest haggler. The dealers around here are treating those things like fucking C6 Z06's. They're treating regular Civics like base C6's. Like I said, my buddy just got his son a new Civic with less options than this dudes G5 and it came out to more money than this guys G5. He went to three 3 different dealers they absolutely refused to budge on the price of Civics.

I'm not a fan of buying new cars, but if you have to get something new, it's hard to get squat these days for 20k... and you can forget about haggling on anything that's hot and in demand. There's so many goobers that will pay a $3k markup for a Civic Si or V6 Mustang, that any mad haggling skillz you have will be instantly nullified.

Civic SI's out the door at 21.5K....Ummm most Folks are paying that pre-tax bro.
Check out the "what did you pay for your SI" thread in the 06 Civic SI forum. Be hard pressed to see many of them rolling out the door at that price. Would be nice but.....

Umm, that's exactly where I got my info from genious. Just because a car stickers high doesn't mean that everyone pays that price and/or follows the lead of all the other retards that "have to have it NOW!"

Lets start with the corrected spelling of Genius.

Then lets re-visit the 'What Did you Pay for your SI Thread"

You find me one single post where someone claimed to have purchased an Civic SI for 21.5K out the door,.....And I'll Pay-Pal you a Hundred Dollar bill Cobretti!

Some simply stated that they right at MSRP or 20,800Ish...Most ended up paying substancially more than that.

But where you find lots of posts of folks buying new SI's for 21.5K out the door is still a mystery to me and all the "Automotive-Idiot-Savants" who are actually in the market for a new SI..........

But then again.....You Cobretti are the "Man" right?.

i paid $20,290. before taxes and title fees. base no navi rallye red. waited only 3 weeks for it.

+ 5% sales tax = ~$21,304. ~$150 for tags and that's just under $21,500.

The guy lives up the damn street from me...would you like me to go take some pictures of it w/ a "CSI > yuo" sign next to it for further proof?

Oh BTW, keep your money...it will help you out a lot more than me when you go to buy your next car for MSRP. Used or otherwise. LoLz!

Quote:

So? That's what everyone does when they want a car they have to be on a waiting list for...whether they take it w/ or w/o lube is their call. Mine stickered for ~$19,800 but that doesn't mean that I paid even close to that for it...

Re: Pictures of my new daily driver, a Pontiac G5 GT

My point Cobretti is that there is not one single post of someone who paid 21.5K out the door NOT A SINGLE POST!

The majority of the post's in the "What Did You Pay For Your SI" thread actually give a price thats PRE-TAX...Unlike Pontiac man who opened himself up for abuse by posting what he actually paid after driving away.

the cars MSRP'eed for what $20800 Last year?

This year they are what 21600, ish???

If we took every post from the what did you pay for your SI thread and averaged them across the actual number of post's it would still be substansially more than your $21.5 Quote.

Do you doubt me there?

I would bet if we averaged that entire thread it would fall right at $23.5+

And of Course I will keep my $100.00 because you quoted some shit that wasnt there.

Does this Quote look Familiar????
$24K for an almost base Civic? Of course GM is going to give you the highest number they can possibly find when it comes to the competetion (or any car maker, for the matter). We're on a Civic Si website for fucks sake, and 10 more seconds of research on THIS board would have told you that people are paying ~$21,500 OTD for their Si's. No one said to buy one of those instead, but if that hasn't shown that you got ripped, nothing will.

Ummmm...Ok a few Cats paid close to MSRP last year on some base model SI's....They "Cleverly" did not put the after tax prices in the post's. Almost as clever as you finding the 6% of people that didnt pay 22-23-24-K Fuck one guy paid 27K for a Fucking Civic????

You find me one single post where someone claimed to have purchased an Civic SI for 21.5K out the door,.....And I'll Pay-Pal you a Hundred Dollar bill Cobretti!

Now there isnt a single post on that entire thread where someone quoted $21.5 out the door........Is There?

Do you always make shit up Dude....Or is this the first time?

By the way, When I buy a Civic if I in fact make the final move I will dilligently work the Dealership for my "Magic" $500 Discount. And if I dont get it done....Depends on the Color, Weather, Positioning of the Moon, Overall mood of Wife, Etc..Etc...

I havent purchased an "Economy" car in years. Even sticker on a Civic is actually cheap to me!

For me it isn't the badge, it is the weaksause engine and the slushbox. Pontiac needs the superchanged Cobalt SS engine and I would think some suspension tweaks that could be taken from the Cobalt. That would make it a fairly cool car in my book.

Until then, that car is just another boring point A to point B box IMO.

Re: Pictures of my new daily driver, a Pontiac G5 GT

the main problem with that car is the depreciation, because he paid msrp for it.
It'll be worth what? 12k next year? LOL
20k would be fine and dandy considering the features he's got and it's not a bad looking car, but he should have been able to get it for a lot cheaper than that, because again, depreciation is going to own him if he decides he wants to sell or the car is totaled in an accident
He likes pontiac so much he should have bought a used GTO, such a much better car in everyway but fuel savings.

LOL Here is a picture of my truck and how much I paid for it...

It was stickered for $10,900 with just 72,000 miles at a Honda Dealer. I talked them down to around $10,600 and they also deleted the bullshit three hundred dollar charge for vehicle preperation. LOL Paint protectant. I took the sales manager and salesman over to a brand new Pilot on the showroom floor. I quickly found on the window sticker the dealer added a charge of $499.00 dollars for tape pinstriping. In a very loud voice where other customers could here, I told him I could buy the identical tape pinstriping for ten dollars at Autozone and apply it just like that within forty five minutes by myself. And then since I had there attention, I asked him how exactly that paint protectant is applied that I was paying three hundred dollars for, I asked if it was buffed on or sprayed on. When he answered that it was sprayed on, I just started laughing. It was probably just hosed on wax or something like you get for seventy five cents at the local spray and wash. He deleted that charge pretty quickly.

I do have little experience in haggling with car dealers and I still didn't talk them down as much as I hoped too.

I have had to put roughly thirteen hundred dollars into the truck to fix some things that were wrong with it. But at the time I bought it, it MSRP'd for twelve thousand and brand new it was a thirty thousand dollar truck back in 1999. And now that everything is fixed, it has a new timing chain and water pump as of last week, the plenum gasket should never fail again, aside from perhaps a clutch at some point, it is good to go for 250+ thousand miles.

EDIT: What kind of gas mileage are you getting in that new Tacoma? Does the TRD version have any more power than a non TRD Tacoma?

I know very little about the new Tacomas.

With just a muffler and air cleaner on the Dakota, I am getting ~16 miles per gallon in town and 19-20 miles per gallon on the highway. lol When I first got it, I was averaging low 14's in town and if lucky 16 or 17 miles per gallon on the highway.

The TRD Tacoma has the same 236HP 4.0L V-6 as the Non-TRD Version.

It is a Fuel-Hog!!!!

I get V-8 Mileage with a V-6?

Average 15 MPG around Town.

20MPG on the Highway if all the conditions are "Perfect". IE: No Uphills, No Trailer, Keep it at 70 MPH.

I have the TRD Sport which has the color keyed door handles "Faux" hood scoop, LSD Rear end, JBL Stereo with Factory Woofer (Weak As Carnival Lemonade!)
17" alloys, and the "Tuned" suspension with Bilstiens.

It a good truck but it gets crappy-ass mileage.

I would post a photo but this Forum wont let me post from Image Shack?

My wife has a 2001 BMW 325.

Thing is a Piece of Shizznat'.

Every "Service-Me-Now" light has started going crazy on the dash, The car literally "Eats" tires, The brakes are bad (Again) and it sprays crazy brake dust all over everything.

Your truck gets barely better gas mileage on the highway than mine. And mine has the old school 5.2 liter V8 in it. Of course mine is a little modified.

That is something that I have noticed about the Japanese DOHC 32 valve variable valve timing V8's too, they really don't get that good of gas mileage compared to the domestic pushrod 16 valve V8's. Especially now with cylinder deactivation.

The same can really be said when comparing yours and Nissans less powerful and smaller V6's to the highway mileage of the Chevy V8's with cylinder deactivation, even the Suburban is supposed to get like 20 miles per gallon now.

I would have to agree. You hit it dead on. It is a nice looking, low performance 2 door car with a decent interior at a fair price.

Cobretti, Is my new "Forum-Friend" with the FCobra Login title.

And yes 24 Valve Tacoma V-6 4.0L is without a doubt a "Hog".

If they would have had a V-8 option I would have jumped on it!

Funny thing is the Tacoma has better 0-60 times than the V-8 Tundra.

I tow a small trailer running my business during the summer months.

I drive it to work all winter at my "Office-Job".

So it needed to be manuverable and able to be driven like a "Car"?

Its actually alot like a Camry with a lift kit!!!

For Real.

And without a Doubt that car is Pontiacs answer to the V-6 "Chic-Stang".

Even if it were Supercharged would it be the vehicle that competes with The Mazda Speed 3's, GTI's, and WRX's of the world?

Probably not...Its a Comfy "Boulevard" Cru-Zear.

No-No-No, I wasnt trying to Offend you with the "Chick" car comment.

I actually think personally that you got a whole helluva a lotta car for 22K out the door!

But in reality that car is not "Marketed" towards the "Youngsters" and speed fanatics 'that want Civic SI's? STI's,Mazda Speed Whatevers, GTI's, Etc...Etc...

That car is marketed at the slightly more mature buyer who prizes some comfort with their sport.

A large percentile of those buyers are in fact...Women.

That in no way shape or form makes you less of a ....Man.

I have friends that drive V-6 Mustangs and realize that in our current performance crazed atmosphere....Those are consider "Girl-Stangs".

But you are without a doubt correct when you say you see more Chicks in Eclispe's, Old school Sunfires and Grand Am's.

I think you have a car that you not only got lots of features for your Mulah....but you also have a car that will allow you to "Jock-Hoes" all day long and deeeeep into tomorrow.

If that was part of your plan....It will work!

That car looks like a Mini-GTO, great styling great features. Who cares what Pontiacs old Rep was????

The Cobalt SS is the car that is aimed at the "Crew" that frequents these types of forums.

Had you purchased a Cobalt SS with a Stick and no leather for 22K out the door you would have eagerly accepted and praised for your "Astute" buying skills.

Obviously you did not want to shift a small supercharged "Boy-Racer" car.

And you my friend are the Man who pays the cost to the Boss of Yo' Ride!!!

And to anyone that doubts that......F-Them.

BTW, the two most outspoken members of this forum who are convinced you made a mistake with your G5......Drive Subaroo-Forrestor's and Corrolla's.

So maybe its...Envy??? Cause instead of driving a potential "Girl" car they are the proud owners of "Womens" cars....I mean "Mommies". And it could eat whatever all day long or get X MPG or What-The-F-Ever...But those are still "Mommie" carz'.

Good job G-Man. Dang that would make a good plate for that G5....G MAN.

2 years ago a friend of mine got an ACcord 4 cylinder for 22k OTD. It may not be the most powerful thing ont he road. It may not have all the MaDd OpShInZ Yo! But at least its a decent car. $22k for a crapbox? Yikes. I just can't get over it.

WOW, I cannot tell where he ends and you begin after that post!

I definately believe that the G5 and Cobalt are NOT the new Cavaliers and Sunfires. Those cars were complete and utter garbage; especially the later Sunfire that looked like a Dustbuster vaccuum cleaner! LOL The Cobalt, G5 and Ion may technically still be in the same size and price class; but now they are solid competition for the Corolla's, Sentra's and the other nicer imported compact cars.

I've been thinking of a good compact car that I can drive on trips to leave the truck at home. I am honestly cross shopping the Corolla with the Cobalt and a few others that get really good gas mileage. I am adding the G5 to my list now after seeing those pictures.

Whichever car I decide on, it will be a used vehicle though. The Spec V just totally ruined my taste for buying brand new. I've had to put a lot of money into the Dakota; but so far I am up to like twelve thousand dollars total for purchase price and maintenance. I think of it as the fact that it was a thirty thousand dollar truck new and so I technically have still saved eighteen thousand with buying it used. It had 72k miles on it when I got it; but that is nothing for my truck. There are people with those things still going strong at over 300,000 miles.

Or pay $30k for an overpriced GTI R32 that only has 240hp. Can get an Evo/STi for about the same price but with more horsepower. And all Audi's are overpriced VW's.

BTW, what did you pay for the G5 Pre-Tax??

The major issue continues to be the "Impression" that you actually paid a full 22K for the Gee-Five....In reality you have a State, County and City that needs:

Cops, Buses, Sheriffs, Shelters, Welfare,Roads, Road Crews, Jails, Prisons,Bridges, Mayors, Guv-Nuhs,Foster care, Parks, Pools, Woods, Homeless Guys getting Drunk in said Woods.

All supported by your Tax Dollars.

This list could get so long it would be insane..

I've changed my tune. It's NOT a dual purpose car, but I can see it making a great daily driver. In the US it's sort of an oddball because it's a class of one. In Europe, where there's not only a class of "premium compacts", there's also the Alfa 147 GTA, a car with a very similar spec sheet, to compete with.

It's just a shame that the US market got the wrong car.

Turns out they were right.

Sure, but there would also be a market for the 205 hp engine and they are losing sales and creditability, especially among young male buyers, by not offering it.

Just think of the 300 or Charger only came with the 2 V6 engines (2.7 and 3.5). Sure, there would be a market for the 3.5, but they would be losing sales by not offering the 5.7.

I think GM made a choice not to have all of the same options between the G5 and the Cobalt, GM doesnt wnt a repeat ofthe J-body tiwns. I don't think we will ever see an S/C G5.

A little side note, GM never indended to sell a pontiac version of the Cobalt in the USA. Although in canada there was a pontiac model released at the same time as the Cobalt , called the pursuit.

Just like the sunfire, the Pursuit (now G5) is out selling the Cobalt I guess GM decided to give it a chance in the US.

I have to disagree, I have read "Rumors" or "Rumblings" of a GXP badged S/C G5.
Which is certainly not far fetched as Pontiac is supposed to be the "Performance" oriented branch of the General.

Now imagine his already "Fairly Good Looking" G5 with Cobalt SS running gear and maybe some of those crazy Pontiac hood scoops.

I run I-70 from Denver and I'll tell ya'....

The lack of low-end Torque makes for a long towing day through the Rockies and most of Utah.

The V-6 is "Strong" but its really designed to be more of a "Driver" not a "Pulling" Truck.

In essence I end up running it on the Interstates all "Wound-Out" when pulling a Trailer at around 3000+ RPM's so I can maintain 70-75 MPH.

It will not "Hold" Overdrive and needs to be driven in 4th sometimes even 3rd.

The 5speed Auto is super smooth shifting and really a great Tranny...

But the V-6 just dosent make enough Torque to pull my trailer up hills at low RPM's.

Does great without the Trailer though and next year I'm going to fit a Nosecone to the Trailer and try to get some "Aero" action going, as its not the wieght of the Trailer (1800#'s) its the ineffiecent "Flat Frontal Area" design.

And yes I will concede on this point....

Thing gets all Weak Kneed and "Ricey" in the derned mountains!!!

You know youre struggling when of those Powerstroke Diesels fly by you at 85-90 MPH towing a Fucking Bulldozer or two......

Bastards!

That is a really nice looking truck. At least that fake hood scoop doesn't look fake, like most I've seen.

There is a Saleen and Roush Ford dealer near here. The brand new Roush Mustangs all have very fake looking stick on fake scoops on the hoods! I was like "OH NOES, not more fake scoops on the Mustang again!!!"

I sure hope that Ford doesn't start crapping up that car with fake scoops again like they did the last generation of Mustangs.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong... although I realize 3000# isn't much of a load, I thought you were *never* supposed to tow in OD?

Although I must admit, when I tow <5,000# in my tahoe, I usually have it in OD and just cruise around 65-70 mph. It does have the towing package though (tranny cooler, etc). If there is even a hint of an uphill I slow and get it out of OD.

Re: Pictures of my new daily driver, a Pontiac G5 GT

I think it depends alot on the transmission and tow rating of the truck about whether or not to use overdrive. If it is like a F350 Diesel Ford, I think it is okay to use overdrive most of the time for like < 9000 pounds trailer weight. That is just a guess though. I've never researched it.

In that Toyota, I would only use overdrive on a flat level highway. I'd also make sure I have a transmission oil cooler for those Colorado mountains.

I tow all the time in overdrive. however some old manual transmissions that were made 5spds from older 4spds, had weak overdrive gears and thus couldn't take towing heavy loads in overdrive. usualy not a concern since the engines they are coupled with usualy require downshifting anyway for said highload periods so...

oh and my truck has "only" the gas 5.4L 3v

I do not tow 3000#'s.

I tow an 1800# Cargo trailer.

My statement was that I generally need to be turning 3000 RPM's when not in OD.
To stay with the "flow-Of-Traffic" on the interstates.

The problem is not the weight but the poor aerodynamics or absolute lack of...With my Trailer.

The screwy thing is that in OD ( I have an Automatic with the Trailer Tow PKG and it is rated for 6500#) It is just a barely able to "Hold" 5th Gear OD and wants to initiate the dreaded "Gear-Hunt"...At which point I quickly drop it into 4th and power away.

In OD my mileage is great! even with the Trailer I can Avg 18MPG on the HWY.

Ohhh but when running in 4th...Good Gawd it begins to just guzzle the fuel, the 91 Octane fuel at that!

If I just had a 4.5th gear it would be all good.

But I dont so my next move is to install a nose-cone on the Trailer and try to "Clean-Up" the Aerodynamics. Or just buy a better F-ing Trailer.

I run a Business during the summer months that takes me and my Trailer all thru the Western states.

It pays well and I like being out on the road.

And the Tacoma really is a "Sporting" Truck as far as Trucks go.

Just couldnt see driving a damned full size all winter as I run a company in an office complex and its hard enough finding parking for the Lil' taco! Plus the Tacoma is an Off-roading Supah-Stah!

In the Mountains....The V-6 just dosent have the Torque to earn its money "Honestly'....Its has to "Cheat" and turn crazy RPM's!!!! That causes impressive fuel consumption. A low end torque monster V-8 the 4.0L Toyota motor will never be. But....I'll race you dammit!

I had looked into the new mid size Nissan Frontier's. I would forever miss my 5.2 liter in my Dakota though. I sure do miss my old 2wd 1993 Magnum 5.2 liter Dakota though. 300 lb-ft of torque with a 3.92 LSD rear end was a lot of fun in that truck, which didn't really weigh all that much for a midsize truck.

How much does that Tacoma weigh? My truck is around 4720 pounds; that was with about 150 pounds of junk in the toolbox. I don't remember though if that was without me in it or not. I need to remove the toolbox, get my junk out of the truck and weigh it again without me in it and with a full tank of gas. Just for curiosity.
