Dropping Military from 5-3-1

Standing barbell military really seems to make my shoulder feel like it's going to fall of. I can do the exercise without much issue, but after, it feels like gravity can make it pop out. Seated dumbell military is no issue.

Personally, I think it's the least valuable exercise (and almost redundant) in the group - but perhaps I'm wrong.

redundant in regards to what...? the bench press...?

i guess i can see your point, as the front portion of the shoulder gets alot of work during bench, but not so much the lateral part of it...

hey if it hurts, it makes complete sense to substitute it... maybe it's something with your form since it doesn't bother you with the DB's...? how are your forearms in relation to the bar when you unrack the weight...? ideally for best leverage they should be nearly perdendicular to the bar...

Re: Dropping Military from 5-3-1

Redundant because of barbell bench, dumbbell incline and dumbbell military. The barbell seems to fuck it. The wider the grip, the worse it is. I rack it as high as I can. Its not like BB military form can really be fucked.

I have not had it as a staple of my routine, ever. I did it on occasion, but not that's it's regular, my shoulder is loooooose.

Re: Dropping Military from 5-3-1

yeah wider grip puts you in a more vulnerable position... try it one more time with your hands right in line with your shoulders...

it's actually a really good exercise, that will also help your bench, but if it hurts you following the exercise then it's not doing any good...

i'm having a shoulder thing right now... when i went to do my rear delt flyes, i felt something in my right shoulder like "zing" when i went to the very first one... i dropped the weight way down and did them, but that shit is still lingering... lateral raises don't bother me, but as soon as i bend over i get that feeling in there again...

Re: Dropping Military from 5-3-1

I'd just do DB instead of barbell, since that doesn't bother you too much. I don't know that I'd ever drop it completely, as there's not a ton of other shoulder work in the accessory lifts where you can make up for it. Nor are there any other really good compound lifts for shoulders.

I wish I could give some better first-hand advice, but incline DB press gives my shoulder far more issues than military.

Lat raises, dumbell, bench, incline - no issees. Just barbell. I've been doing pretty close grip, which does help, but I don't think I can go closer. Even then, still feels loose after.

FWIW, my shoulder has been dislocated and pops out on occasion. It tends to go away after time, but lately it's not going away.

Have you tried doing some of the rehab exercises for your shoulder to strengthen the muscles that hold your shoulder in place?

Re: Dropping Military from 5-3-1

Done it all. My shoulder was dislocated when I was 16. It always bounced back to normal, but pops out every 2-4 years and takes about 3-5 weeks to return to normal. Last time, it has not returned anywhere near normal. I even have to be careful when I sleep. I felt good last night, pounded some military today, now it's loose again.

Went to a doctor a while back, in CN, he told me surgery would take 6-9 months of rehab, then I would have limited motion and compromised strength. I might just try doing working shit in here and there and feeling it out.

Sounds like the ligaments are too loose to really hold it in place any longer. I'd do the surgery. If you have a great surgeon and do the rehab, I've heard it's totally fine.

Might have to revisit. Essentially, doc told me socket was partially broken, ligaments loose.

standing press is a full body lift, seated press is not

Re: Dropping Military from 5-3-1

I don't find my body really engaged in the lift unless I cheat anyways. Just because I'm standing, doesn't mean my whole body is engaged.

Yeah, but when accommodating injury, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Re: Dropping Military from 5-3-1

The only issue I ever have with standing comes from the fact that I use more weight than seated and it's easier to "cheat" the last couple reps.

Re: Dropping Military from 5-3-1

cheat as in using your legs to start it...?

i see no issue with that on last couple reps when they get tough... i think i may have become too much of a form nazi... although i still find it extremely important on the main part of the set, i think to squeeze out an extra 1 or 2, a small break in form is acceptable...

edit: but this can also depend on the exercise... not sure i'd be breaking form too much on squats or deads... recipe for time off...
