I haven't driven a manual in quite a while but I've become quite good at it again. First car I learned on was a Honda Accord. My main question is about shifting into third gear. It feels as if it isn't an easy flow like 1-2, 3-4, 5-6. 2-3 feels like there's something in the way, and probably once a day I end up grinding third gear. Has anyone had this problem, is it normal, or do I need to go to Honda ASAP?

2nd question... I have a rattle somewhere on the passenger side front seat when I'm going 30 miles an hour or more. It's not loud but I can hear it and I hate rattles! Has anyone had this problem and knows where it's at?

The 2-3 shift issue is normal. Some here have had it really bad, others get used to it, others have had it go away over time, and some have seemed to "fix it" with a change of fluid. The few people who have had tranny repairs under warranty seem to have had more problems after the repairs. It is usually prevalent when it is cold. Also, 1-2 gives problems for some. If you search the forum you will see about 1,000 posts about the topic, with several technical discussions. Essentially, the only way to avoid the grind is to make sure you are all the way into third before releasing the clutch (even pressure, don't shove it). If you think you might not be, goose the throttle and it will get over that last resistance (balk ring). Some people report that changing to new Honda MTF or Synthetic MTF seems to help (I believe that the Civic uses 10W-30 MTF, but I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong).

Try the sunroof. Mine rattles, especially when cold.

I have the rattle too, it fixes itself though, it kind of comes and goes.
As far as third gear, join the club man, haha
Contacting Honda didn't do me much good, people say synthetic MTF helps, i plan on trying that soon.
I have just kind of learned to live with the occasionally stubborn third gear.

I switched to royal purple synchromax about a week ago, and it made a dramatic difference with the third gear issue. The only time I notice it now is on a cold start when it's around 25 degrees. It goes away as soon as everything warms up.

I had the rattle too. I took it to the dealer and they told me it was the rear airbag. All they did is they put foam pipe insulation and the rattle is gone. tech showed me that the airbag moves as you go over bumps and bounces between the body of the car and the plastic pillar. You can fix it yourself, go to homedepot buy the insulation and get the clips from the dealer cause you gonna break them when you gonna take the pillar out.

Can you specify what type of MTF fluid you got to replace it? I'm going to the dealer for a maintenance and want to get it.

From January service news....

Stiff Shifting, Popping Out of Gear? Replace the MTF
NOTE: This article applies to all M/T-equipped Honda cars and trucks.

We’ve heard reports of customers complaining about the M/T shifting stiffly or popping out of gear. In each case, the M/T was using aftermarket MTF or old Honda MTF [emphasis mine]. If you’ve got a vehicle in your shop that fits this profile, try draining the MTF and replacing it with new Honda Genuine MTF (P/N 08798-9031, H/C 8429094). This new MTF offers better overall shift quality in cold weather (especially in freezing temperatures), and it’s got better friction reduction for improved fuel economy and longer transmission life. After filling the M/T with this new MTF, take a 10-mile test-drive around town so you can do a lot of shifting. If you’ve still got this problem after your test-drive, then it’s time to do some troubleshooting.

Alrighty, I found the rattle... It's somewhere in the consoul... I'm going to tear it apart tomorrow after work and see if I can find that loose wire.

Its the only MTF fluid they have at the dealer. I dont think they carry the old one anymore. I think it says new formula on it or new and improved something like that, it a gray bottle with green sticker

Yeah tearing the consoul apart isn't good for someone with my skill. I'll take it to the dealer!

yea man same problem here. I took it to 3 different dealers they all told me it was normal. So then i complained about american honda and they sent out a regional manager to the 4th dealer and drove it and he said there was nothing wrong with it. they just dont want to change the tranny fluid. OH and my emergency brake dosent work because the cables were stretched. Hondas covering that but they say it is not to be used as an emergency brake. only a parking brake. i think thats bullshit man. Oh and if anybody reading this lives in the nyc / long island area do not go to north shore or ps honda. they are the two worst honda dealers ive ever had to deal with. If u count acura as being a honda my family has owned over 8 hondas including 2 civic sis and a rsx type s.

If the dealer can't duplicate it, there's no reason to fix it. Be as specific as possible when describing the problem and have the tech do the test drive with you in the car. Best to have the car driven when the transmission's cold.

My dealer replaced the tranny fluid. I was told they would replace all components regarding third gear then reassemble if the fluid change didn't cure it. This was done about two months ago (fluid change only). The overall shifting has improved very much (all gears), but this just makes the defect less noticeable. I will probably bring it in to have them replace third gears parts. . .

I was at a honda dealer earlier today and asked them if they were doing warranty work on the famous 2-3rd gear issues. They say they were warrantying ALL of the SI's that came in the with problem...

I found a rattle from under the passenger rear seat. It was the grab bar for the seat adjustment.

third is occasionally a bit of a problem. especially when it is cold. i thought it was because i'm a short girl and i wasn't pushing the clutch in far enough, but its not. and i also have the odd vibration the dealership can't seem to find.

I have had problems with getting into 3rd gear from 2nd. I found out that changing the mtf and getting a comptech ss helps. The comptech helps by letting you know if you're in the gear or not. Before the ss I would think its in and let the clutch go and hear that infamous grinding noise. After the ss I have less problems getting it into 3rd but if I do, I now can feel its not in so I dont grind anymore. The mtf and ss doesnt help cure the problem but it helps you not grind your gears.
