From the videos I've seen so far, the Civic has won everytime. Didn't Nissan get nailed for claiming 180hp???

Let the games begin....should be a good thread...

My uncle has a blue Spec V. I've only seen it once, never been in it yet. It was one of the first cars on my list when I went shopping for cars a month ago. There was none on the lot and the salesperson had no idea what I was even talking about.

I saw one then a couple days ago and my wife and I both agreed that we lilked our Si better. I'm looking forward to getting together with my Uncle sometime in the near future though so we can compare the 2 cars.

The QR25 engine is one of the worst engines ever. I'd rather have a rotary.

Apples VS Oranges. No doubt the 06 Si is a better car.

Keep in mind that you are comparing a old less expensive design with a new one. The Spec V would run circles around the Si that was released around the same time (the EP). Well, at least until it had engine problems.

It is a little more fair to compare the Si to the Cobalt SS, Ion Redline, WRX, Saab 9-2, GTI, SRT-4... stuff like that. Then again some of these cars are old and outdated next to the all new Civic. It should be better in a lot of respects as it is newer. See how the Si stacks up to the competition in a year or two (or about 5 years in the case of the Spec V)....

One star thread for using ">>> <<<" in the title. Makes you look like an attention whore.

Seriously though, the QR25 has a nice torque curve. The only reason this engine suffers is because torque nosedives well before peak HP. See the graph below:

From a dig the Spec V has the advantage. The Si is 175lbs heavier with MUCH lower bottom end torque (to maximize fuel economy). At highway speeds the Si's power can be extracted from the upper 1/3 of the powerband (thanks to better gearing). See below:

Torque isn't the only thing that takes a nose-dive in the QR25.

I've owned both the SE-R/Spec V and Si.

The QR25DE runs fine IF you put an aftermarket header on it and loctite the butterfly valves. If you fix those two problems, usually the motors will run great assuming the damage has not already been done. The rapid oil consumption comes from these two things, usually, and most dead motors can be attributed to it as well. Boosted ones tend to eat up headgaskets because the factory ones are made of very thin paper, but boosted ones also put up some pretty good numbers when they are tuned right.

The cars are not top end motors. Torque drops off in a hurry up top and even with great aftermarket camshafts and tuning they struggle to see 96-98mph trap speeds. Gearing doesn't help them either, as it's really short and geared towards acceleration so once they get moving they tend to run out of steam.

Handling is great once you get some good tires on them. They're VERY nimble in narrow and twisty areas thanks to the suspension setup, and my Spec V liked to play around on road courses as well thanks to the Nismo suspension it had on it. Make 'em stiffer and get good tires on them and the cars will handle a LOT better than you think. It'd surprise many a person at autocrosses and road courses.

In the two I owned I pulled 14.6's at 94-95mph in both, so they can run pretty good with bolt-ons given their horsepower if they are driven right, but reliability plagues them pretty bad and is ultimately why I got rid of both and ended up switching over to the Honda camp.

It is a cheaper car, which is why it is so appealing. You can pick them up new in the $14,000 price range (regardless of what they sticker for), so you can get yourself into a pretty sporty entry-level car for a nice price.

I like the cars, and they'll always have a special spot in my heart. Most expect them to blow up while racing, so when you sail past them people are generally left a bit on the surprised side. They tend to have a bad rap thanks to the motor, but some of them can be pretty impressive. The aftermarket really hasn't given them much of a chance until just recently, so I hope to see more positive things coming from the cars!

The Si is a much nicer car, but at $7000 more I would certainly hope so.

my old 99 Si with intake and exhaust would beat my buddies spec-v with intake all day long, not by a huge amount but it would defintely pull him...and thats when the Si was a 160hp b16.

I feel bad for that Spec V, then. I never had issues with Si's, and that was either stock or bolt-on ones. Never had an issue with them, and that was from a stop or a roll.

SER Spec V is nothing more than an Altima with the 2.5 Four Banger. Granted, some performance specs, but no big deal. I would pass on the Spec V.

You do realize that the SR20 was in the USA from 1991 up until 2001, correct?

The engine had trouble passing emissions and was old. Nissan decided to axe it for a more universal engine. The MR20DE is about the closest thing left to the SR here in America right now, and I have no idea how it works.

I agree on the pricing, though. The car lacks the performance punch that similar cars in the MSRP price range go for, and most people consider the motor to be pure junk and want no part of it (and who can blame them).

Both cars, outside of the motor, aren't really that similar at all. Please know what you're talking about before you spout off worthless facts.

Let me make a correction, I was too vague in my assumption... by SR20... I meant SR20DET.

The 06 Si is no match for the SpecV; my friend has one with only a CAI and the torque is awesome down low but I still had him like a fender whenever we ran, with my B16 I/H/E.

The new wave, well not new really, is to swap the VQ35 motor into the SpecV chassis, its nice swap and the cars run low 13s/high12s with it.

What would the F/R weight ratio be on a Spec V with a VQ? Thats gotta be rough, as does squeezing it in there. (granted I can't remember seeing a Sentra's engine bay)

I use to have a 2003 Spec V with aem intake, motormount inserts, lower tie bar, obx header, axle back meagan (elcheapo stuff) Nismo short throw. The car rocked. It has v8 like torque there is no hesitation with its broad torque curve and short gearing.

At the end i put a 75 shot of nitrous on the car, took it to the track and ran a 12.7@99mph. WTF Dumb track, it said i had a .669 60' But my friends z24 ran consistant 13.7-13.8 all night. We raced and were bumper to bumper from 50-105mph. I do have a couple videos, here is one with low bottle pressure of my spec v.

http://web.triton.net/d/davidt/4th.avi

Id take a 06 Civic Si over the spec v any day. Civic si is beautiful, i cant take my eyes off it. it has more hp and handles awesome. But spec v vs 05 civic... spec v for sure.

I have a 2000 trans am with catback, raced my friends I/H/E spec v. from a 5 mph roll he hangs dead even with me to 60. From 45mph he puts 3 car lengths on me then i walk past him hard. The throttle response and gearing in those cars is amazing. For reference my T/A ran a 13.4@106mph
