Actually, she did good this time. Which is unusual for her.
At $16,900 it's not enough to actually live on. Thus the working poor still have to work. But at least the "barely living wage" jobs will now have a bit of support that allows them to provide food and shelter.
the other thing to understand here is all that money gets pumped back into the economy almost immediately. Numerous economic studies have shown that poor people spend money almost as fast as they get it.
the program will cost $50M / yr but what people need to understand is that goes right back into the economy through spending that would otherwise not have been. I'd prefer to have $50M/yr that poor people spend on food, shelter, etc. rather than have Wynne piss it away on overpriced Hydro contracts, highways etc. I just hope that the poor won't spend it all on alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. Still, except for drugs, that money does go back into the economy.
The "disincentive to work" is a real concern in basic income plans as it would flip a capitalist system to a social market which we clearly don't want. But these days "technological unemployment" is a real problem that's only going to get worse. Basic income is seen as a possible solution to that.
This is just a pilot program, we'll see how it works out. Hopefully the government can study those 4,000 people closely and see how much this re-distribution of wealth has worked out for the rest of us.
Being one of those that caused technological unemployment, I'm interested in seeing how this counterbalances the fact I, and tech people like me, have put people out of work.

TIL buying cigarettes and alcohol is not putting money back into the economy.

hate that i agree with JaT but this would be interesting to see....
doesn't sound like a bad plan, question is if wynn should be the one responsible for it given her previous endeavours.
this suit is black not.
