I was a bit nervous the furnace was going to die over night Sunday to Monday. It was working overtime trying to keep the house at temp. No issues for us but hearing a lot about furnaces dying and pipes busting from others.

I know we've had "what temp do you keep your house at?" threads, but dang that's cold, unless you keep it at something different while you're home.

18-20 wtf sorcery is this? my shit does not go under 22c if it does it's all hands on deck lulz.

the nest in the new place is great, kicks ecobee ass (well i had the ecobee light, what a turd).

eddie, i was thinking re. the attic too, adding like 10 inch spray insulation...most older homes could prob use it. not a must, but could help.

furnce, obviously you go High Eff. and try to get fully modulating. if not then a 2 or 3 stage.

In terms of accumulations, anywhere from 10-20 cm seems likely across much of southern Ontario mainly along and north of the 401 corridor with closer to 5 to 15 cm across Niagara.

I think 7 am on a weekday is perfectly fine provided no infants in the immediate houses next to you.

I was out at 5:30am here and saw a few people already out with snow blowers, one was wearing shorts

FFS ... noise bylaw for snowblowers? \:\| Ah fuck, now I better check if Markham has one...

I went out at 545 with my ghetto 'electric snowshovel' ... Heavy as fuck, but works well only if you go in the direction of the wind, else you're eating snow.

Neighbour opens the door frantically telling me to don't shovel his sidewalk \:\| Just tryna be a good neighbour, hopin' he'll shovel when I'm away, etc... I do it all the time....

we didn't really get THAT much snow. people just unprepared or just simply don't know how to drive in this.

off at work at 11pm and what a shit show.

-van stuck on a little hill infront of work, saw it on my break at 7. after work saw it getting towed. dude just gave up and left it there.

-saw on cp24 the cluster fuck of DVP north..really? we've had much worse than this and this year they have to close it? da faq?

-people running out of gas on the dvp and just ditching their cars and walking to get gas making it impossible for plows to get through, i thought it was common sense to keep gas above 1/2 tank in winter?

-bayview/york mills hill, another cluster fuck, but i guess they don't realize that they can loop around sheppard to leslie to york mills and come DOWN the hill. again people just ditch their cars on the road, i'll worry about it tomorrow.

-every highway onramp, saw a BRZ with all seasons stuck at the bottom of the keele/401 onramp, seriously where the ass are you going with a brz without snows? because of that asshat entire ramp was backed up. 2 new mustangs stuck at the bottom of the hill on summer tires.

and how the hell does this even happen?

fuck it might as well call in the army again lol

Shoveled again yesterday evening, everything all nice and clean. Leaving for work this morning to see the side walk plow came by, blocked my driveway again and on top of that covered my piece of the sidewalk with snow as it when through with the snowbanks collapsing behind him.

I might cave soon, every year I tell myself I will get one, but manage without. The only real reason is for when the plow comes and blocks the driveway, otherwise it's not bad.

Ya think I will. Each year I talk myself out of it as it's really not that bad. Then we get hit big and I'm getting a mini heart-attach shovelling while a neighbour is casually walking behind his snow blower, in and out in no time.

my old toro, after about...12 years of use from the old house on sheppard ave. to mine, shit the bed. tried to fix it but it wasn't worth it. electric starter motor went, flywheel had most of it's teeth gone, rope pull thing broke, fack it. will buy one just like it in spring but probably keep to my ricer roots and buy a honda.

That's the only time I really use mine (outside of last night), and even then I don't use it each time the plow comes by. I don't mind shoveling but I guess it depends on the area you're covering. I shovel the equivalent of about 4 car lengths. One thing I do know is that I'm not moving to a tropical climate any time soon, so it makes sense to have one. I bought one a few years ago at the end of the season when they were heavily discounted.

why not just get another toro? i'm not sure if the honduh is worth the upgrade in $$$.

i really wonder how well a single stage can cut through the windrow when it's all icy. i recommend just getting a 2 stage ariens and be done with it (if your driveway is remotely big).

mine died on sunday-monday morning and my house temperature dropped to 9.5 while i was trying to troubleshoot it early in the morning. luckily i pinpointed it to be a bad starting capacitor for the inducer fan motor. thank goodness. only cost me $6 to fix from the local electronic surplus junk store. nothing like pushing the luck of a 19+ year furnace. i pray i can keep it alive for a few more years or else i'll be calling Screamin for help.

honestly i'll probably end up with another toro. just have to see what budget/prices are like after season.

we made that mistake before. at our old house, it was directly on sheppard ave. driveway you could fit about 7-8 cars end to end on, and then neighbours driveway was also attached to ours. he had a heart attack so my brother and i would do his driveway too. when the city plows would come by, and being on sheppard ave they would come by often, and leave a huge 5-6 foot wide, 4ft tall snow bank covered in ice because they would be cleaning 3 lanes (middle lane and then two lanes) instead of the typical 1 lane for the most part in a backstreet.

we bought a big ass, 2 stage (or 3 stage?) snow blower that drove by itself, had more gears than my tlx, big fucking machine, and it worked great for clearing the snow bank, but was legit overkill if there was just a bit of snow and not a dumping.

so we also bought the single stage which was easier to use, faster to use, and made the driveway cleaner, the two stage would always leave about 1" behind.
of course, being the younger brother i would end up doing the driveway and i couldn't be bothered to walk allllll the way back to get the 2 stage to do the end of the driveway, the single stage still killed that huge snowbank. granted not as fast, but not that slow either, you just kept jamming it into the snow bank and when it doesn't pull itself into the snow you pull it back and jam it in again....just like a fat chick.

was it two or three years ago we had a good dumping of snow, neighbours car parked on the street and snow plows fully covered it, highter than windows all around it. single stage got through that shit too. plus it's just so much smaller to store with my tiny ass garage and shed in the back yard. unless you live in the great white north like Bill i really don't see a use for a two stage. i put that toro through hell but always maintained it too, new auger, carb rebuilt every year, even new bolts just because the old ones were rusty, it just kinda fell apart within the last year all at the same time.
