Wow it's only been a few years since I've posted but instead of just following Wayne's facebook I decided to just relog and ask you guys....

What can you guys recommend a female Type 1 diabetic do to lose weight?!? This forum still seems to be full of testosterone but I don't care - looking to educate myself.

Currently doing 30 minutes of cardio - keeping my heartrate at 150 (using the 220 - age) and then doing one tour (15-20 reps) around the weights we have which consists of the following equipment:
Biceps Curl
Triceps Press
Pulldown
Shoulder Press
Chest Press
Hip Adductor
Hip Abductor
Seated Leg Press
Les Extension
Leg Curl
Calf Extension
Abs

Being diabetic I've changed from eating one large meal a day to 3 meals consisting of between 35-50 counted carbs. Horrible habit I've had for a few years and doesn't help my A1C at all so it needed to be corrected.

Does anyone have recommendations on things I should/could do to see better results? I'm stilling getting used to getting calories beforehand and then not crashing afterwards and just this last week started to get it figured out.

I know this isn't an overnight deal and have felt a lot better in the last 3 weeks I've been even going to the gym but already want to push myself a bit harder......

Get your diabetes/eating under control. And under control well.

Get off of the machines.

To follow up with what Dahlia and Silock said.

Women should do the same thing as guys. Ultimately muscle tone and strength is what we all want. Hormones do the work of keeping a women and man looking different.

Machines isolate a single muscle, being strong isn't about one muscle. It's about using the muscles as a chain. i.e. curls, holding a suitcase uses your biceps similarly, but also your back and and shoulders and even your lets to hold your upper body still. So doing machine curls only works part of this. What you want is the whole movement.
Also machines can put undue stress on one joint or muscle. Most of us can do a lot more on a machine, putting more stress on joints. But without the benefit of actually being stronger.

As far as your cardio. Don't worry about heart rate too much, especially if you're using the built in heart monitors. Also, cardio is a misnomer. Working at 150 is probably only a slight stress on you heart or lungs if you've been working at that bit for a month or so. Start interval training, where in you spend 2-4 minutes at more around 165-170 and then spend 2-3 minutes at a lower level where your heart rate can try to get back down to like 140 ish. Intervals truly strengthen your heart and lungs, making you truly faster/fitter. Plus I bleieve the evidence is they burn even more calories than a stable medium pace.

Plus you'll get that "harder push" feeling. After intervals my lungs feel the stretch and I feel alive. They can be brutal at first and it can take a while to determine the right pace, but ultimately they're one of the best ways to do aerobic exercise. But don't do them every time, even once a week and you'll see great results.

That makes a lot of sense and we have free weights but I don't have the slightest clue how to use them correctly. Guess I need to consider learning how to correctly use the free weights and other equipment they have (they've got trainers so I'll sign up) - I'll take some pictures this evening of our gym, considering I only pay $10/month and its 24/7 its probably the best bang for my buck....

Machines are just not natural movements. I don't touch them (the cable ones are alright).

Just find some basic exercises,, you tube some good form, start light and go heavier slowly.

you sent me a message on facebook right, did I ever answer it? I'm so sorry if I didn't fb is always wacky with my notifications.

I think that gym is pretty swank. But I think just some simple circuit training and mobility metabolic conditioning workouts would be best to suit you for the time being and once you build up a tolerance for working out you can start doing weight training.

While everyone else is quick to recommend you jump into things, it's hard to do it on your own without someone to give you an idea of what you're doing (even people who played high school sports showed them how to lift some weights) or you could be like mr mom and just be a cardio whore.

Indeed.

Plus, pics will motivate the hell out of you as you make progress.
