VTEC Variable-Timing & lift, Electronically Controlled: This is Honda's term for their technology that adjusts the amount that intake/exhaust valves are opened based on the current engine speed. The Insight uses a variation of the VTEC system that Honda calls VTEC-E ("E" standing for efficiency), that operates only on the intake valves.

The "i" denotes "intelligence" which means the added application of VTC or Variable Timing Control

The "i" in i-VTEC stands for intelligent. Found it on the Honda site.

I thought it was Sport inspired too - that's what Consumer Reports said in 1999.
And Consumer Reports is never wrong.
(yeah, i know the general concensus for years has been Sport Injection/Injected)

Ex = Executive Dx = Deluxe Lx = Luxury Hx = ?? The CRX HF was "High Fuel", Perhaps Honda wanted to stick with the X's

I think it stands for Sports injection too, but I agree with everyone that links Si to fuel injection. In 85, Honda offered carburators or fuel injection on the CRX, Prelude, and Accord. The fuel injected cars carried Si badges to differentiate them from the carburated versions.

So it's Sequential Injection then? I'm tempted to go to my local Honda dealership and ask a manager or something because the salespeople don't know wtf they are talking about if one of them is asked a specific question.
Read this: http://cars.ign.com/articles/688/688078p1.html
specifically, this part
Based on the already sporty Civic "S" model, the Si gave the Civic's 1.5-liter powerplant some much-need fuel injection. (FYI: the "S" stands for "sport", so "Si" stands for "sport injection".) Honda's economy car was now making an unheard-of (at the time) 91 horsepower. Suspension tuning was done on this sporty Civic so that the chassis' potential would match that of the engine.
And lay it the fuck to rest.
