Mike - that one is so much better than the first birds in flight picture.
Bill - that ice pic is really cool.

GB - nice! Both the ones I posted were 100% crops - I'm laughing now at how I raped them in lightroom last night.
Mental note - do not play with lightroom when I'm stupid tired.

Lone Elk Park by scottspaeth, on Flickr

A relatively dull image today. I'm still working on my late fall palette and my feel for this particular elk (he's the dominant "harem" bull). I also spent a fair bit of time thinking about and crafting what's probably the first draft of my artist's statement about these wildlife images...

At a certain point, I have to ask myself what draws me to photograph the same animals over and over again. I started with trying to capture a feeling for the park as a whole, and shot everything that lived in it. But at a certain point, after capturing the park, I moved on to more specific goals. I've shot thousands of frames of the five bull elk that live here. I keep coming back to the fact that they all have their own personalities. Personalities that are much easier to glean than one finds with the female elk or the bison (or the whitetail deer). I'm no longer shooting generic elk, nor am I trying to bring across what "elk" are in the way that a Nat Geo photographer would; these have all become portraits of individuals, or at least attempts at them. It started with bull elk #24 who has been known to ham it up for the camera, but little by little I've come to see the separate personalities of each bull. My goal now is try to bring out those personalities in my images.

I've been studying the work of Edward S. Curtis, W. Eugene Smith and Ansel Adams a lot in the last few months and the mixture of their work and their attitudes towards their subjects is where I'm drawing inspiration from, but I don't yet see how I can talk about them in the context of my stuff without reeking of hubris.

 photography is hard.

 cheers,
 scott

I did a crop to show the texture of the feathers. The bird is the size of my thumb.

Yeah, it was a little narrower than I wanted to be, but it was dark in there at the time, and I was trying to bounce flash instead of directly lighting (see ISO).
And yes, she is pure. All the mannerisms of a boxer are there (pouncing and boxing). She is amazingly well-behaved for a 14 week old, and I can already tell she's going to be very loyal. Just need a name!

I think the dog looks good wide open.
 cheers,
 scott
I do love the shot as it is (f2) but I might like it better with his entire head and ears in the focal plain (maybe like f4). Hard to say really. I think I know what Gb is saying but I do love the shot the way it is.

I like it just the way it is. That's basically how your eye would see it if you were that close to the dog. At most I'd try it again at 2.8

Is that using a bracketing mode? I looked at the Exif data, but have never tried one of those with a rebel body. Looks great.

I finally got out of the house this weekend walked a rail to trail for about two hours here is one of my favorite shots.
This poor fox had an injury right front leg and I am not sure how well he will be able to hunt and stay healthy through the winter.

BTW this would have made a nice entry for my internal framing/framing within the frame assignment from a couple weeks ago.
