Hmmm I'll have to try this but spot metering seems like a big pain in the balls. Its centered no matter what (instead of being tied to the active autofocus point like the 1d series) so that means metering/focusing, and then recomposing on EVERY shot. (unless of course your subject is centered...)

That seems like a ton of work when evaluative metering has come a LONG way.

if you're going to be shooting a spot with pretty static lighting, throw it in manual. it eliminates potential shit exposures due to the camera misreading even in spot. it helps to have a little wiggle room over/under to fix it afterwards, but a little overexposure never hurt anyone \:\)

Yeah. Check the Exif on the 350 or so pics in my photostream. I hate losing a shot because I let the camera guess for me. Even when taking pictures of birds feeding, I lock focus and recompose quickly. I usually stay in one-shot mode specifically to keep the focus from changing. Continuous focus seems way too slow for me.

Ever since I started using the D200 I have been playing more and more with metering. I think it is because I can flip a switch to change between focus modes and everything.

The sky is amazing. I think the wall could be brought up a bit (and desaturate the blue) or you could just crop right at/near the top of the wall.

Yeah Titmouses are like scalded dogs, never stopping. I use to see a ton when we lived in the south but up here don't see them as often.

Nice pic. Great job on the deeply saturated colors. The line between the sky and statue is a little pixelated from post. Nothing eye-grabbing, but visible.

Here are some birds. I was really hoping not to hear a "splat" sound while underneath them.

Thanks Mike. Yeah that pixelation is straight from the camera \:\( . It's some weird bumps in the statue mixed with a large disparity between the statue focus at f2.0 and the sky. I have no idea how to make it better \:\( . I'm very proud though on how it came it out as it took a giant temperature change to get the statue to look like that under the really weird orangish lighting throughout the entire Plaza.

Looking at lightroom though I exported the wrong history that I wanted, I totally uploaded the one without clairity boosted which gives the statue a better look.

I'll upload the original later along with the clairity boost and see what you guys think.

the diff. between the pianist shot and this one, for me, is that the b/w gradient doesn't add to this pic, or really feel like it has a reason to be there. I love the effect, but it isn't nearly as powerful in this pic as it was in the other one.

that said, the flare in her hand is a really nice touch \:\)

edit edit: fuck selective color. even when it is less artful than it could be, this style looks hot and wrecks that tired cliche (sel. col.) i've been wanting to steal this for a while but haven't had anything that made sense

I never realized how close you must be to these birds mike. Thats a 60-75% crop @ 200mm. I was like 40-50feet (a guess) away and man, 200mm isn't really shit at the end of the day.


I just sent the 7d Back to canon today \:\( My remote port on the side of the body doesn't work properly (the remote doesn't "click" into place and when I move the camera (even with the tripod still attached) I have to wiggle the remote plug or re-insert it to get it working again.

Also told them to check out the backfocusing issue while they've got it (since canon claims that Micro-Focus Adjustment should me a "last resort" (though I've accepted it as a neccesary evil at this point)...
