what's more efficient, running on a treadmill or running in the park? I don't feel like running on a treadmill does anything for me at all.
I thought about running in the park, but my excuse is that I work 8-5.... so I won't be able to run until like 6:00 pm and I have to sleep around 10pm. So my excuse is that I can't work out at night because then I will be too "pumped up" to fall asleep. Do you guys that run a lot actually work f/t?

I always see people running in the park here and when I see them I think to myself that they must not have f/t jobs... Cause how can you work 8 hours a day, commute home and then still have energy and time to run? and then eat dinner? There's just no time.
My wife and I both work 40+ hours per week and make time. I don't run that much at the moment though - 3-4 days per week and 30-60 minutes each time out. I throw in some cycling and weightlifting as well. I like to do my training first thing in the morning and typically get up by 5:30 on those days. My wife is the exact opposite in that she will sleep in and get her runs in after work. She lifts a couple of days a week at lunch time.
Thanks. I guess it's about making the effort to FIND time. It's really hard though, I have to say. I can't work out during lunch. I don't want to be all sweaty afterwards and I like to relax during my lunch.

Getting ready for a 10k on Sat. Did a test run, knocked out 6.25 miles in 49.26. Walked for 1 min to slow my breathing a little. Longest distance I've ever run.

when you run long distances, do you count your breathing to help you pace yourself??

meaning in the army we used to say 1/2/3/4 every time our left foot would touch the ground. that helps me out ALOT now when i count out each other time my left foot touches because i have that breathing problem as well along with clenching my fists when i run.

you don't have to sound out aloud just enough to where you can hear yourself and not have it impact you

I pace myself based on my breathing... a 3 in, 3 out is around a 9:30 pace for me right now, 2 in, 2 out is 8:30 or under... sounds weird but it works for me.
Ive been feeling like shit since the half last weekend, only run once since then (monday) and did just 3 miles. Coughing and feeling super achy.

Have a 5mile race on Sunday, then onward to the other half in November. I just want to feel healthy again dammit!

Worked on my breathing a little. Did 4 miles in 31. Breathing was better, but my legs were heavy and sore.

ran a race yesterday with my cousin. A local 5 miler, less than 200 people running. It was put on by the rotary club.
Post race food was Italian Wedding Soup, Clam Chowder and hot dogs.

I cannot think of three less appetizing things to have as your post race food.

I wasn't all that happy with the run. Got a nasty side stitch halfway in, ended up walking through the water stop. Finished in 43:48.

 blah.

That's what happens when you only run once in two weeks, and that one run is only for 3 miles.

Gotta tune up for the half on nov. 14th!!

Just finished a cyclocross race - good god that is painful. Top ten finish!! (out of 13)
Got to get a 5k run in today or tomorrow, and probably racing again tomorrow afternoon.

Set out to run 5k today. Felt like shit and mailed it in with about a quarter mile left. Legs are toast from yesterday and just couldn't find a rhythm. It also seems I've done something to my right calf - started hurting on and off yesterday, and is worsening today. That is going to keep me out of today's cross race.
Got to start breaking these in. Not sure what I think yet, but I get 30 days to decide if I want to keep them.

So yeah. Learned a new lesson this weekend. Running hills sucks. Luckily i'd been intervalling in the gym this week on the treadmill @15* incline.
This weekend was Dawg Dash, a local 5/10k to benefit the Univerity of WA alumni association... like it matters lol highschool. It was my 3rd 5k I've run, and the first one that wasn't mostly flat. Matter of fact, it basically went up and down a hill.

I'm still slow... but this was the first event I've run where I beat the Average completion time. Average was 36:26, I came in at 35:33.

About 5 seconds slower than my last 5er, but that one was totally flat. I was below the average on that one. 674th out of 1209 overall, 74th of 112 in my division. Nothing to write home about, but at least it's headway. 3 in a month, getting better each time can't be too bad, right?

date event no place sexp divp time
10/24/10 Dawg Dash 634 674 319 74 35:33
10/03/10 Salmon Days 1343 824 387 21 35:29
09/26/10 Brew HA-HA 5k 237 675 344 131 37:56
AS an aside, I was 216 when I did the Brew Ha-Ha. Woke up this AM at 203. Hate the runs, can't debate the effectiveness.
