this is my superbowl pre-game: iced tea and fat tire. question: so how do you both diffuse the light and still snoot/limit it mainly to the glass?

obvious answer would be to just long exposure/no light the glass to the same exp. and drop it in, but as i'm beering and the super bowl is starting, i didn't feel like going that far right now \:D

The trick to lighting just the glass and bottle and not the rest of the scene is to have your light source close to them so that it will require less power and stuff farther away won't get lit thanks to the inverse square law of light (light loses 4 times the intensity with a doubling of distance). but you need a big enough source (your umbrella) to still light them evenly. It's a dance of trial and error.

The first time you fake a sunrise, some loudmouthed jackass who knows that area will come along and "out" you for misrepresentation of reality. Seems like the inverse happened to an east coast guy in OT when sunsets were being posted by Cali members.

yes, those are nose prints on the window, lol

and i can't figure out what caused the haloing around the ears. my focus seemed to be on the cats back instead of the ears, so i'm not sure if that cause it.

Nice, that is a good idea for a picture. And that is funny about the nose dots on the window. I swear, the bottom half of every window in my house is covered in nose dots. It especially gets bad when my cat's allergies act up and she sneezes on the windows. lol

It definitely looks like a blur around the ears.

That's just bokeh around the ears man. I really like the shot conceptually but I think the focus on the ears would be better.

Did you adjust clarity at all? Do you have/need lightroom?

I got a brand new Quantaray(Tamron) AF LD 70-300mm F4-5.6 Tele-Macro(1:2) for 125 dollars the other day. Should be fun to toy around with and take to the racetrack.

i think it had a lot to do with location. Arizona (out west in general) is gorgeous.

i was waiting on a new toy.

for comparison's sake, i went out to shoot the same thing I'd done previously:


^^old photo, 70-200/2.8is2 @ 200mm, f/2.8, black and white'd



with less crop, more like the first one:

all 85mm f/1.2

less than amazing subject matter, but I was curious how the two would compare.

I do realize that the best test would have been the 70-200@85 wide open to compare, but eh, idunwanna \:D

Well I thought I lost all my pics about a month ago, finally built a new computer last friday, so hopefully I'll be posting some more up shortly.

It's cold as fuck where I am, if I'm not fishing, I'm not shooting, lol.

I took the camera out the last time I was on the lake. It was so cold the fucking thing wouldn't even fire up.. Took it home, defrosted it and it's got a full battery

I think you need to pull a lot of the green from the background of that buddy, It's a nice photo otherwise! I love the detail you can expose on a horse lol sounds perverted.

Thanks. Those horses have turned out to be good photo subjects. Horses have tons of muscle, it shows in the pictures with the veins showing everywhere and all.

By pulling the green from the background, do you mean to just sort of tone down the green a little in my editing program?

in photoshop you would create a hue/saturation layer mask, select the green tone, drop the saturation of just that tone until it's acceptable.

now hit ctrl-del to delete all the written mask, select your brush, make sure it's painting WHITE, and paint over that green bit.

watch it just fade away...

boo-yah.

Thanks for the tips JSmonet and GB. I guess that I am going to have to break down and get some Adobe software.

I've been using Corel Paintshop Pro X2, other than the included spyware that I defeated, it works okay for the 30 dollars I paid for it on Woot.
