I am a terrible driver. That or me and this clutch just haven't grown close enough yet. It releases very near the top of the pedal but still grabs fine, so I don't think it's a wear thing. I've tried adjusting it a little but it didn't seem to change much. But if I try a hard 1st to 2nd... ugh. I fall out of boost, it's not smooth. I need to practice apparently \:\)

Yea, I just need to get used to it and see if I can adjust it down a little more since it's practically right at the top and my left leg isn't used to just a little "stab" of the clutch I guess. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, just observing and my post was mostly tongue-in-cheek.

lol, those cars in general mask a LOT of bad driving. Every time I drive one at the track, I feel like I don't have to do anything. Just turn the wheel where you want to go, put the power down, and the car will do everything else for you. At least that's the feeling I've got from the new STi

I'd imagine you're right, haven't been on a track and not sure if/when I'll get to be. I'm thinking I want to start out at the Tire Rack for their AutoX events since they have a really nice track for it and it's all of 5 minutes from my house. Like Dan said in another thread, I'm not doing myself any favors by "learning" on the EVO since they do mask so much driver error but it's what I have so it's how I'll learn I suppose. The only point I was trying to make is I'm not shifting smoothly or quickly at this point, I feel like a complete n00b.

Hard first to second in a short geared turbo car without a nice, smooth gearbox can be tough. FXT in first was nothing then redline.

That makes me feel at least a little better \:\) I think it's just a matter of getting used to the acceleration since it does pull through a very short gear pretty quickly. Fortunately I don't need/want to do that very often...

Are you sure there's nothing wrong with any of the parts? Hopefully danl will have some advice on things to check for...???

It was at the upper end of it's adjustment. I got underneath and started lowering the engagement point and it seems more natural now after just backing out of the garage and pulling back up our driveway (which is pretty steep). I may have gone a touch too far the other way, but at least I know now it's not something more sinister than just the clutch rod adjustment. I'd say I turned it about 1.5 total turns counterclockwise (lowers engagement point).

Quick update - took it for a quick spin around the block and yea, that was it. I'm not quite sure why the PO had it so high, he was far taller than I was so I can't imagine that was a comfortable release point but whatever. That was really my only gripe with how it drove and it was easily fixed.

I am, however, still a horrible driver \:\)

I still have difficulty on hills & "normal" takeoffs (slight clutch slip) from a stop....launching isn't any different, nor is slowly easing the clutch out until you start moving.

I actually am making "what shoes am I going to wear" decisions now based on how conducive they are to pedal feel. It's difficult, b/c at only 5-10% pedal travel, you can barely feel any pedal pressure/feedback at all...so it's difficult to tell if you're actually pushing the pedal at all for those first few bits...I am much smoother in bare feet or in my 1/4" sole work shoes than I am in tennis shoes.

Do the Z's have any kind of clutch-rod adjustment? The VIII and IX have it, but they did away with it on the X and I was reading at least a few complaints about folks with really high engagement points but with no way to adjust it down. I seriously felt like I had never driven a stick before at times... Never killed it, but that's small consolation for bucking/rocking the shit out of it just getting it going

Ugh. I'm not sure why they ditched it on the X. I read a few scattered complaints about clutch master cylinders blowing up too, not sure what the hell would happen there.

I'm actually surprised the rod adjustment moved it down as much as it did and was thinking if I went too far, I'd get drag or lockout at high RPM but I wound it all the way out and got the smoothest shift I've had yet above 7k. I did the same thing on my 1G DSM loooong ago and while I've forgotten a lot of shit since then, I think I remember it having a lot of adjustment too. It's funny because the process/mechanics in the IX seem very similar to a 20 year old DSM...

Hard to say. The 08 i drove felt perfect but it was brand new. One thing im amazed at is my IX is on the stocker still at 70k and it feels great. There are cats on evom who arent tracking them and needing clutches muuuuch sooner.

I'm still jerky as fuck in my '11 wrx when I drive normally.. Smoothing it out requires extra effort and clutch. I am usually just in and out with it. I was the same way with '09 it replaced.

With all the different parts (ACD, rear LSD, etc...) in this thing, if you don't take off smooth, the car will remind you to mind your shit. I'm a slipper by nature, but generally get a little "chatter" on most starts so I think that's a good thing? My IX is up on power a little, but it's not making gobs of torque (330/320 at the wheels) and I actually trust the previous owner when he says he never raced it. Even if he did, the car shows absolutely no signs of it so whatever.

It is the stock clutch

Edit - the stock one I referred to earlier was on an EVO X that I test drove a couple years back. I was just making the point that in stock form they didn't seem to need much adjustment.

Srsly, when I test drove an MS3, I hated that clutch. But I feel that way about most modern stock clutches, they all seem too damn light, it's hard to get a feel for the engagement point unless you're wearing ballet shoes.

The clutch in the MS3 was pretty light, but I never really had much trouble with it, at least not enough to notice it. On that note, anyone know a good way of attaching a cruise control cable to a throttle body? On a similar note, I was so happy to see Mitsu didn't drive-by-wire the last gen EVO's. Not sure about the X though... I think it has DBW?

VW 6MT's don't have an adjustable clutch rod either. I think it's because there's no clutch fork pushing the tob.

No way you should be falling out of boost on an evo especially the I'd with the moved and better turbo. On a 1-2 you'll get a good pop in the back of the head it hits so hard so I will slide the clutch in on that shift to take it easy on the car. The oem clutch adjustment is fine, it should grab near the top but not put pressure on the tob. You should be able to push the slave in with your hand. You want it pushing on the pp ASAP so you have no clutch drags and a quicker shift at high rpm. Also the manual adjustment simply alters the bleedback hole in the master and the engagement point. Auto adjustments are done via this being properly set and the hydraulics resetting everytime you use the pedal, just the same as your brakes.

Thanks Dan - I checked the slave while I was under the car today and it seemed fine, I can move it by hand at least. I can say that drivability after the adjustment is much easier for me. I don't know if it's my seating position or what, but it just feels more natural. No drags and high RPM seems smoother but it may just be a muscle memory thing, I don't know.

On another note, I installed a cruise control module today. Fuck you, commute.

And finally, I caught up with a buddy of mine at the drag strip last night who works for Hoosier Tire (about 30 min from my house?) and he gets to go to all of the circuits around the country for work, pretty neat shit. Anyway, he's going to start AutoX with his MR2 at Tire Rack, and I think we're both going to go up to Gingerman for a racing instruction course later this summer.
