If you had to have two lenses, some kind of 35/50/85 1.4-1.8f prime and one of the ones below, which of these two (below) would it be and why? Assuming you're shooting everything from indoor events to outdoor wildlife/landscape type stuff?

I'm not planning on buying soon, I'm just curious to learn more perspectives/opinions on this stuff \:\)

See, my reservation about that is the lack of IS. I feel like im about as steady as michael j fox sometimes, so I worry how my pictures would come out without the IS. That's why I like the idea of the second gen, until I realize that the lens that seems to do everything I want is so far outside any fantasy of a camera budget for any foreseeable future lol. At least with lenses that run 1k~ (new or a little used) I can kinda pretend I'll have that much for a lens at some point.

You really don't need IS, my 70-200 f4L doesn't have it and I've taken some wicked sharp pics with it..

My 10-22mm doesn't have it either

Not something I'm personally worried about to be honest.

keep shutter speed above 1/60 if handheld...otherwise, use tripod

No IS doesn't mean squat taking pictures of fish outside... Now go take a picture of them fish in a dark setting and tell me how the no IS works for you...

IS greatly helps when you get into low light settings.

As BobBarker said, with my 70-200 2.8 IS II I can shoot 1/15sec handheld.

I need to start shooting more indoor porn I think

(Remind me never to shoot a 70-200 f2.8, I'll most likely hate my f4L after that \:\) )

Oh yeah, picking up 24-70mm tomorrow (borrowing, not buying) can't fucking wait to try it out!

The F4 70-200 takes amazing pictures so I wouldn't fret it... yet... But yeah, the 2.8 70-200 is just, well, in a league of it's own really.

And the 24-70 is my next lens.

Do it!!! I <3 my 100-400. It's not quite up to the 70-200 2.8 IS II in speed but I like it more. The push-pull zoom is fucking awesome and the reach of it is just spectacular...

Another big difference is I just can't take a bad picture with my 70-200, while on the 100-400 I have to just be a little careful...

You can't take that money to the grave. Enjoy life while you live! And if you can't borrow a 100-400 for your trip, let me know and I'll let you borrow mine.

I appreciate it man.. The one thing I do like about good glass is that you rarely have a problem with getting a very good chunk of your initial investment back if you sell it.

Did you send this question into the TWIP podcast? Was asked this week. Was a split response, but it depended on what you were doing with it. Most votes went to the 2.8 it seemed like. But, Don Juan Pons and Rick Sammon love the 24-120 and I've heard it's crazy sharp.

I thought the 24-70mm was pretty much the sharpest of them all (not including primes)??

No, I've actually never heard of the TWIP podcast before. Sounds like I should probably download that episode though lol

I've said this before, but the 24-70mm range on a crop sensor is Meh to me. The lens is stunning. Color and sharpness are top notch, but the range does fuck-all for me. I'd rather have the extra reach and the IS of the 24-105 for the stuff I shoot.

On a full frame, everyone MUST own a 24-70. must must must.

This Week in Photo, pretty good. Mostly just round table discussion about the weeks news. They touch on a couple of listener questions, and each suggest a photo related product. Book, accessory, whatever. Good way to kill some time on the commute.

I own the 24-70mm.

It is (or at least was a few months ago when I checked) THE most rented lens on Borrowlenses.com.

I'm kinda hoping the Tamron 24-70 is all it's cracked up to be. I'd bet it goes for under $1K street before the end of the year and it has IS. I've heard the bokeh is a little harsh in some circumstances due to how the aspheric elements are formed, but those also help with edge sharpness, so . . .

I have the 24-105 on my ff.. pretty sharp, not as fast as the 24-70. I would have loved to get the 24-70 but the 24-105 came with the kit I got with my 5dII. IS is nice to have.

24-105 is sharper, 24-70 is faster. Neither is "better" because both have issues. I have the 24-105 and it's okay.
