You get more detail and can see the craters and stuff when it isn't so bright. Here is one I took with my A65 and 55-200mm kit lens... Moon noise reduced (1 of 2) by ewraven, on Flickr

I have a six inch diameter Dobsonian telescope that I have played with a few times. The first time I had it out I was looking at the full moon with it. And I kid you not, I saw a satellite pass in front of the Moon. It was the coolest thing EVER and was only there for a split second. What I should do is hook up my NEX-3 to it, focus everything in and record video for a while. See if I can catch another Satellite. Hmmm...

Turn AF off, manually focus using live view, and adjust exposure within a few test shots if needed. I like to overexpose a little bit because pumping up the black / dark / shadow levels is quick and easy in PP. Sharpen whenever possible, reduce noise, viola. Handheld works too. Just fill up the buffer and you'll probably have a keeper or two.
