What aperture you shooting at? If you could go a few stops lower and a little higher ISO (I'm guessing ISO200 or 400 you used) might help get the entire body in the focal plane.
I love macro photography, and hate it... because even at f/11 the DOF is so fucking slim.

edit - I do want to say I like the photo a lot.
Thanks. Aperture was somewhere between 5.6-8 IIRC. My lens is a legacy minolta lens so the camera doesn't capture aperture data. ISO was 400 and shutter speed was 1/500. I shoot handheld...and I don't have a macro flash set up. So I've been trying to find the perfect combo of settings that will allow me to use higher shutter speeds to minimize camera shake, as well as the subject not being still. I'm going to try ISO at 800 next time...I've seen shots at up to 1600 ISO with the Nex 6 that were still pretty sharp without any noticeable noise. And I am totally with you on the love/hate. I was initially using a 50mm/3.5 macro lens...but the working distance literally an inch if i wanted to get to 1:1..it was impossible to shoot any moving subjects like bugs. I would take like 50+ shots and one would be actually usable. Now I use a 100mm lens...and the added working distance makes all the difference in the world.
Here's a few I've got uploaded, nothing special on either and way too thin DOF really, but hey, it's macro!!!

Love the colors on the beetle and the details on the grasshopper! The thing I love about macro is seeing the details that you cant see with the naked eye.
I just took some (will upload later) and the fly was grooming itself with it's 2 middle legs. It was turned upside down and just looked a little freaky.

haha thanks! there's a bunch from that day that i'm very fond of. a friend in the club, his wife just found out she has stage 3 colorectal cancer. don't know which part of the stage though. scary, sad. i've been thinking about printing one of the images to auction/raffle off at the club meeting next week. i'd do that one, but there's very few people that race motos in the club.
i like this one a lot

Thanks, but let's wait and reserve judgment till i get it on the computer
I'm sure it will be fine. Trust me man, I have a lot of experience "blending exposures."

You could straight up HDR it, just be careful with the settings you choose. If it were my shot, I would try that out, just to see. If that doesn't work, try taking a good exposure from the sky as your starting point, and then drop in a couple layers of brighter stuff for the ground. Use "blend if" under the layer blending options to start your mask. See below.

Now using the blend if slider, watch what happens to the area in the sky by the roof of the truck.

This is a really good way to finely blend layers, but you have to be light handed and do it in steps. It still needs to be masked by hand for the ground area, but I just made my life about 50% easier by doing the roofline this way. This works well when your two sections are fairly close EV to one another, it doesn't work as well if you're trying to blend something really dark with something really light.

Do your image in many layers, with many small adjustments, as opposed to trying to do it all on one or two layers with heavy adjustments. Then when you're happy, group the layers, duplicate the group, merge the duplicate, and there's your "flat" version for spot removal and final color adjustments.

 Nate

A robin caught a meal and perched on my power line. Wish the bokeh was better, but at f/11 aperture I wasn't expecting much better...

 Excellent photo again.

Thanks Nate, I'll take a look at it... I'm not sure my Photoshop elements will do all that. YEAH! this would be an awesome metal print. the slot canyons are on the list of places I want to hit on a week long RV trip. Grand Canyon, Zion, a slot canyon, aaand some place else that I'm spacing on right now. I figure I can do about a 10 day trip and hit a bunch of awesome places.

If you have blending modes, it should. If not, time to step to real Photoshop lol.

Taken with 100-400 with 2xiii teleconverter...was out in the yard trying to shoot the birds and this was too nice to pass up. Would have been even better with a smaller DOF than f/11

I disagree about the DOF. I like that you have the flower mostly in the focal plane (honestly probably could have gone to f14 or something. Really it's lacking in sharpness by a tiny bit but at 800mm, can't complain at all.
It is rather dark though, could use a tad more light.

I like it though, I've never thought or attempt to take marco shots with my 100-400, and I give you props for going for it.

The first one is epic and although the face is soft on the second, it still works great with the fork being the focal point. Excellent shots and a really wonderful perspective on each.

Nice, I can see the line where you blended it though. Try using a softer grad.

What I see that Nate might be seeing is right along the mountain/sky line there is a weird cyan line almost along it.

There's a funny artifact there. Looks like a gradient used to darken the sky to me but it could be on the OG exposure. Regardless of where it came from, I would try to smooth it out.

hhmm... weird. i still don't see anything. i did use a GND filter, so maybe that had something to do with it, but it was only one stop and it was a soft grad i thought you were talking about something higher up near the horizon.
anyway. thanks for the input and help.
