Anyone ever have intermittent pain on the top of your foot? It actually goes away after about a mile and is only mildly uncomfortable, but there are some days when I can barely tighten my laces because it hurts so bad and then other days its perfectly fine.

Sounds like extensor tendonitis. Sometimes caused by lacing your shoes too tightly.

I had that once and it turned out to be something with the front of my calf (by the bone) and the tendons running down over the ankle. I massaged the front of my calf and those tendons for a few days and it went away.

Sounds weird....but yeah maybe some inflammation or bruising that gets aggrivated if your laces are too tight or sitting in the wrong spot?

All I know is that I had a super shitty 19 mile long run last night. After a great week of confidence boosting fast shorter runs, I think I was just tired. My goal was to do it (running the same course as the marathon) and stay close to race pace. That went out the window after the first mile where I was fighting the wind (it on the beach and the afternoon winds always pick up) and everything seemed like a huge effort. Managed to average a 7:45, which is what everyone says your long run effort should be like (:30 to 1:00 slower than race pace) but I had to stop a few times to get the HR down.

Oh well, I gutted it out, and I know its the cumulative effect of all these runs that will decide my performance, but it was still a bummer.

Then I got up this morning and ran another 6 and felt the same way. I should have taken the day off, lol.

Interesting. Ill look into that as a possibility.

Oh, I signed up for my fist race of the year this saturday! Only 22 miles but it looked like a fun/fast course and I needed some motivation to get in a long run this weekend.

There's a marathon and 50K option available and you've signed up for the 22 miler?

Just kidding, but seriously

I know, kinda random but it seemed like a fun distance.
I also was planning to do back to back long runs this weekend so it works out good distance wise.

I bet you kill that race!

I'm feeling better about my bad run the other day. Talked to my brother and he said he had several of those horrible days. I've also been reading various threads on Slowtwitch about people qualifying, the plans they used, etc..and I seem to be right in line with a lot of them.

You have to embrace the shitty long runs, I honestly find the more shitty training runs I have the better race I have.

Did some nice hill repeats today, 1x1200m, 2x800m and 3x400m. Such a bang for the buck workout.

Starting to get my miles humming.

I've set a goal, minimum 10 miles a week this year, I've done 500 mile years before, but it's been a while. My target is for 730(avg 2/day).

I know it ain't shit for you ultra guys, but running is just one thing for me, not THE thing.
Gotta plan some races soon too. Gotta have a purpose for putting the time in(though my last 2 1/2s I did almost no prep for).

On that note, signed up for the OC Chili Race series. A 10 mile trail run every month through March, right in my back yard (which happen to also fit perfectly into my taper schedule).

holy fuck shit. You are nuts...but in a good way.

Did a 35k trail race this morning, ended up 2nd overall and 5 minutes off the previous course record, finishing in 2:55. Felt super solid the whole race, did only 2 v fuel gels the whole time cause my stomach was a little off but never felt depleted. Felt great on the hills especially, it had about 3800 feet of vert but was super runnable. I could defnitely tell I am getting stronger on the downhills which has always been my weakness. After the first climb around 5 miles in I was with a pack of 4 other guys, and I broke away once we summited and expected them to be on my heels but I never saw them again till I hit the turnaround and was heading back in. Usually I'm the one getting smoked on the down hill so that felt really good.

Jebus that's a great time. Congrats!

Ended up tweaking my back Sunday morning doing weights. I think my form was off vs. recovery from Friday. Going to take it REALLY easy the next several days. Need to recoup in preparation for the OC Chili 10 miler and HB Half. Both less than 3 weeks away.

Back stuff sucks! I've been dealing with some on and off lower back pain for a year now. Comes and goes, and doesn't bother me when running, but some mornings I wake up and its just brutal. A chiro showed me some stretches I can do, and they do help, but I need to do them more regularly.

Had a good week/weekend of running. Managed 63 miles, including a good 12 miler on the trails at Whiting Ranch (your hood right Kent?)as well as some fast runs. Today I did 11 at race pace on the most difficult part of the Surf City course. One of the long boring out and back sections on the beach path as well as the 6 or so miles that go inland and loop through the park and have the only two hills on the course. Felt pretty good, and it was actually nice running in the sunshine and 78 degree weather.

Gonna hit this week hard and finish up with a 20 miler this weekend...then its major taper time. I want to be ready to kill someone for a run come race day. \:D

Yep, that's North of O'Neil but still in my back yard. GREAT area for trail running, and one of the reasons I'm doing the OC Chili series. Hoping to talk to some of the more experienced folks about their preferred routes.

Curious - what back stretches they recommend for you?

Basically, its just push-up position, then push up with your arms while leaving your stomach/hips on the ground. I also lay on my back over a fitness ball and that feels really good.

Cobra position in yoga?

I do that and upward/downward dog most-run/ride. Good stretches.

Cobra:

Lift the hips off of the ground while pushing off of the tops of your feet and looking up and it becomes upward dog.

2014 calendar is finalized! I bit the bullet and registered for three races in one shot:
  • Collegiate Peaks (25 miles) - May 3rd
  • North Face DC (50 miles) - June 7th
  • Mt Werner Classic (50K) - July 26th
  • Leadville (100 miles) - August 16-17th
  • JFK (50 miles) - November 22nd

JFK registration opens in April but I'm signed up for everything else now. I'm get really excited about this schedule, which is saying something since I'm stuck in a winter wonderland (60" of snow in the past two weeks) and sometimes it's hard to get stoked when running outside is so difficult. Bonus points for my speed demon girlfriend getting into ultras and running everything but Leadville (where's she'll be crew/pacing) this year

Woke up with a really sore right Achilles after yesterday's run. That's a new one.

Seems minor and I'll assuming it'll heal up in the next day or so, but it's annoying.

Just did my last long run of this build for the Surf City Marathon in 2 weeks. 20 miles, averaged a 7:48 pace. Felt pretty good even with it being really warm today. I think all this mileage is catching up to me though, cause I'm fucking exhausted. I'm already at 160 miles for the month. Really looking forward to this taper. Plan on doing lots of mental training and visualizing the race.
