Situation: Buddy has parents living in condo, with parking spot. Parents have no car, so parking is for when 1 of the kids go visit. (No visitor spots, or always filled.)

Condo will only give 1 (RF?) key fob (as they should), since they only have one spot.

Would they be able to purchase a standard garage door opener, and 'clone' from the signal from the fob?

Or are those garage door opener's only able to 'pick up' the frequency from the garage door opener unit itself, or?

I'd imagine some people would want to code their car's built-in shit to the code, so there's gotta be an 'easy' way to clone/duplicate?

I think they're asking for $250 for the remote + built-in access fob.

I don't 'know' if there's a way to 'do' it. But I think you should 'talk' to the condo owners to get some 'ideas' if you know what I mean.

That 'seems' like a good idea.

The answer is no, unless you have the tools to copy the site and facility code off the remote and create a a RF unit that will mimic the code. It's basically reverse engineering.

The systems in condos etc is not the same as your home. The remotes talk to an rf receiver that spits out wiegand and sends it to an access control system so each remote has a facility code and card number to track and program in the system. No way a regular remote for a garage door opener is even close to that.

You can always see about buying he same remote online and having the condo security program it in for you as sometimes they jack the prices when you want to buy a new one.

When I was still in the condo I was able to program the built-in universal garage remote in the G35. I was surprised since the remotes were individually programmed to the condo's system, but the car was able to 'grab' the code from the opener and program itself. So maybe find a universal remote and try it???

They probably used a very cheap RF system. The ones today have encryption and boast how codes can't be grabbed. But some condo boards are cheap and want the cheapest systems so they get what they pay for. You wouldn't see this type of stuff from the likes of Hid, Kantech, ict, etc

or just pay the $35-$50 and buy another one from the condo.

path of least resistence...

$250 sounds about right - the condo where I rented wanted the same amount for another fob.

thank god my old ass condo uses the stupid universal remote with dip switches, additional fob is however much a universal remote goes for. may not be the safest, but i rather not pay $250.

and we are still on keys, not fob, so a additional/replacement key to the building is only $15 lol

if your condo has a decent wireless RF system you will be pretty much SOL with the major brands as they have much tighter security on their systems

+1brazillion for everything loudsubz said.

why they try to resell for so much or deny the purchase an extra is beyond me though. its easy money for the corp.

tell the parents to talk to the property manager with the situation and work something out. most are reasonable if you talk to them like humans instead of walking in and bitching/complaining (like most residents).

definitely talk to the spot owner first.....most condo bylaw doesn't allow for rental of spots to non owners/resident of the building.
