Probably my top 5 frames that I've snapped at the track. Only gripe is I cut the lower hand on the guy holding the board but other than that the shot came out exactly as I intended.

Probably

I'll chalk it up to my laziness meaning I rarely do layers or anything other than changes that affect the whole image, and flickr's sharpening algorithm.

3 frame burst. bike outside of board, bike inside of board but I didn't like how it was framed, and the one above.

I didn't stay for a second lap :P

Here's two from this evening. My cousin spotted this owl when we were working on my driveway lights. Ran inside to grab my cam and tripod to get a few pics. It was on my neighbors property and kept flying around so it was hard for me to get close to it. Wish I would've had something more than the 18-135mm.

I took that shot yesterday morning.

I just saw the other cannon pic in the contest thread...someone else took that. Both shots are from Valley Forge park though.

It is not the same line of cannon, my subject line only had three cannons that were not as tightly arranged as burton's cannons.

Honestly, I'm sure that'd work fine in a pinch. Front elements aren't nearly as delicate as we seem to think

That's dust on his sensor though, so now I'm picturing someone removing the lens and using Mirror Up to spit on his sensor

Actually, the dust is stuck to the sensor. I have a blower and it does nothing.

It needs a wet cleaning and I don't think that spit is nikon approved....it may be ok for a canon.

of the greasy-fisted pix i took reworking my bike, i ended up liking this one so much i re-exported it in a fitting size for my background



what i'm curious about is how I could have made the transfer to b/w better. I just let lightroom do it this time around, but there seems to be a lot of work in doing this "right".

here's the original color version that, aside from some color temp tweaking, didn't get any real color-related treatment

There are a million and one ways to do it here. Here's how I might approach the image you posted:

Open up the file in CS4
Add a 'Black & White' adjustment layer
Add a 'Levels' layer above that
Set the blending mode of the Levels layer to 'Hard Light'
Tweak the levels adjustments and opacity of levels layer to get the look you want
If you were starting with a more colorful photo I'd recommend tweaking the 'Black & White' layer to fine tune things, but in this case the levels tweaks should be sufficient

Give that a shot and let me know what you think. If you're looking for something less contrasty for this image (which I doubt) you can try other blending modes, but hard light is a good place to start.
