Dear Mr. Beefhead,
What give the film that you are using that especially dark and contrasty look? I really like the night time street picture.
  Thanks,
  Me

that night-time shot was not film, that was with my 30d
the chinatown one was B/W film, I think probably Ilford HP5+ 400 speed.
the cycling shot was Fuji Velvia 100
the snow scene was the 30d digital.

On the chinatown and cycling pictures is it the film, camera settings or processing that gives you that look?
On the digitial pictures are you pushing the contrast and the blacks. I am not sure what you are doing but it gives your pictures a weighty and substantial feeling that I can not accomplish.

the color film is very contrasty, it's color slide film - Fuji Velvia - and it's known for saturated colors and deep blacks.
The Ilford b/w was underexposed which is what pushed the blacks down. That's shot with a Holga which has a fixed shutter (roughly 1/100) and only two aperture settings, an equiv f/8 and f/11, but again that's an estimate.

But I also do some tweaking in lightroom, mostly playing with the tone curve to selectively alter different zones. I can't remember exactly what I did with the street shot to be honest.

1. I'm feeling it, but the tilted perspective isn't working for me.
  2. Did that u-turn come as close to you and the fence as it looks? And was it planned?
  cheers, scott
I fixed the horizon and cropped it in LR2, but it seemed boring to me so I left it as it was shot.
It actually wasn't a u-turn at all. I took the shot looking left and panned as the car drove by. The reason it looks like a u-turn is because my neighbors driveway is on a slant so the camera was level looking both ways down the road, but was pointed upward a bit looking across the street. With that weird movement when panning, it makes it look like a u-turn.
