scoot on a serious note, how do you get so close to these animals? Im guessing even with a 70-200 you would have to be within 15-20 feet for that pic. I know its not like your big ass is gonna sneak up on them.
Is all this stuff pretty close to where you live? I guess its just fascinating to me being a city folk,cause i go crazy if i see little possum or an armadillo run across the road.
That's the 14-24 on the D300 at 24mm, so the fov is ~36mm. I'm close on that shot - which is why his head looks too big and the legs look too small. I need to get lower with these shots. And I'm using the minivan blind. He was close to the road and while I can get within 20-30 feet on foot, I can get under 10 feet from them in the van - wife drives and I lean out the open sliding door. That's by far the best way to photograph bison - unlike elk, bison will seriously fuck you up if you approach them on foot.
And Jon!, you're in Texas which has some of the best wildlife in the country - especially for birding. It's not Wyoming, but still damn good. Get on the highway and go west. Stop when the landscape turns cool.

Yea man you can do better. You may be irrationally emotionally connected with that image, and I don't mean that as any sort of burn. We all have those images where we like them for some reason that no one else gets. I would learn from this shot, and move on. Just my $.02

Yeah, not much I could/can do about that. It was the only spot at the fence I could squeeze into. Manually focusing it was also a huge pain in the ass.
The rest of my shots of the race are from the grand stands behind where this was taken.

Kyle, next time try aiming your light on to a bounce card to reflect onto the surface a gloss black wheel. Black wheels (and black cars for that matter) don't really "light," as you can see here. They just reflect whatever else is brighter around them, which is usually everything. What has happened is the pavement which has been lit by your strobe is simply reflected on the wheel surface, therefore causing that nasty texture. And yea. Put the umbrellas down... FOREVER. Hard light for cars, nothing else.

To be totally honest, I stood in that spot for about 20 minutes and just did a shit load of panning... Most of which ended up like crap! I got 2 or 3 frames that worked out of roughly 200 brackets at that spot. For the whole race (which was only 2 and a half hours) I shot over 1300 frames and finished with maybe 5 images that I'll actually end up using.

No worries. I didn't end up going, and decided to sleep. Could have also gone to Hyperfest at Summit Point as well, but decided against that too. Went to bed at 2:30am, woke up at 5am to take my buddy to the airport, couldn't fall asleep until 11, got a call at noon to go to Hyperfest, and decided to just catch up on lost sleep from the trip.
