Congrats to you guys who have been published.
One of my pictures was found on Flickr by the Texas Sierra Club. They used it on the cover of a brochure. It is a panorama I had taken with my then four month old Pentax and stitched together in Microsoft ICE. They are the windblown trees along the coast road in Rockport, Texas.

Whoa this is awesome! Can't wait to get more of this...need to re-focus It's not Motortrend but I'm pretty happy about it. Got to shoot all the photos for a buddy of mines feature article in a fishing magazine.. Even got one of the pics on the cover.. Top right is mine.  I made my buddy move about 40ft to take this pic so I'd have the sky in the backgrounds instead of the opposite bank... I think it turned out pretty good (He lost the fish btw, lol!)  I was required to get specific pics which was cool, even better that's my Dad in the top left!!!

Finally got one of these!!! I've spent more time in the past 3 weeks chasing these things then I care to remember. Also, it looks like my 60D was the problem, not the Canon 100-400. I slapped it on the 70D and it's been razor sharp.

how do you correct this without running around the subject trying to catch the right light or changing between multiple filters or lens shrouds all the time? set up a controlled environment or stage a shoot?
watching the light and knowing where it's coming from, and balancing that with the backdrops available and the action that's happening is a fine dance that can be really tough when you're trying to get more than just snapshots. That's also where shooting details of the rigs can be good. Or the people involved in the scene, sort of shooting it journalistically. When you're out shooting, try to MAKE the photo, not just take a snapshot. It's hard, but that's why good people are good, and the greats are great.
See if you can schedule an early or late run with a couple of friends, get that golden hour light. It doesn't even have to be a full trail, I wouldn't be able to tell if you were in a rock pile off the side of the staging area or in the middle of a trail at an OHV park. Lots of place in JV like that, unfortunately that's not much of an option for you hehe. This is something I'm dealing with right now, I've always just shot stuff as it happened, but to get the images I want now, I have to make them happen. I can't build a portfolio strictly off of race images if I want to be hired for produced images. If I can get an image that looks amazing during an event, excellent, but I can't always count on it. I have a few that I really like, but most of those are early morning, at dusk, in the dark, or with some crazy shadow contrast that stands out as different.
Speedlights can be helpful for filling in shadows, letting you use the sun as a rim light, but don't think they're going to automatically make your work 9's and 10's and run out and spend $500 on one, they still need to be used "well" with a lot of thought.

Did you take a pic from the other side to get the sunny side of the engine? If so, post that one up. All the details of the engine are hidden because it's in a giant shadow.

Stopped by a friend's shop today myself. A former owner of the shop passed a month ago and had a very catholic funeral, so they had a celebration of life at the shop. Unfortunately, only about 4 other people showed up, that was a bummer. I got to meet the widow, and although I hadn't met the guy before, had a nice chat. Remembered something I'd learned recently, about not side stepping the issue. It's real, it's happened, ignoring it doesn't help them. Talking about it actually does though. I didn't push her for info or anything but we had a nice, real, chat. It was a month ago today that he died, so she was having a rough one.
Anyhow, this is an old land speed car that one of the guys in the club just bought and is refurbing. 34 coupe. It'll run a 4 banger for now, it's got 2 extra mains welded in, hard lines run for oiling, some cool trick shit. This guy's not afraid to put money into his race cars, and that's why he has records. 5k for a set of custom rear aluminum wheels. fuck me. We talked about a guy who cut up an old volvo head and mated it to a ford 4 banger from the 30's, lol wut? Reversing the flow of a v8 flathead for better aspiration... Nutty fuckers. How am I supposed to get my own 200mph record with guys doing stuff like that?
