It was tough, I didn't want the fat to congeal since there was wind that was causing it to cool quickly. I had to set the shot up, take it at different angles, reset the lighting, etc. Used a single 580exII with a 24" softbox camera right at 1 o'clock, then reflector camera left high at 9 o'clock. The restaurant has very large windows and there was a lot of sunlight coming through that I had to scrim and diffuse. Kinda tough since there was so much light.

The biggest thing that changed my photos dramatically was that 95% of my shots I either shoot at sunrise/sunset. Other ones like stars and things like the waterfalls above were not, but yeah, it's all about the lighting. I don't even bother with the camera half the time unless it's and hour either side of sunset/sunrise.

GSParker GSParker Unregistered	I suggest the 85mm f/1.8 over the 50 f/1.4 to be honest. Or just stick with the nifty fifty. But with action shots like this appears to be, i'd look at the 70-200 f/4 as well because it is relatively inexpensive for what you get and will be much more versatile. but none of this will matter until you work on your exposure, composition, timing and THEN your post processing.

I'm not even half as good as most of the guys on here but here's my $.02 anyway. I think you should have gotten closer, either with a longer zoom, more cropping, or simply positioning yourself closer to the side of the course. You're trying to take a picture of the truck hauling ass, not the trees half a mile away, right? So crop down on the truck, zoom in, or get closer to it so it fills the frame more. Same with this guy https://flic.kr/p/na6ahk cool truck, lots of mud flying... and yet its mostly a photo of a big wide open muddy field. Is that what you wanted to take, a picture of a field with a truck going across it? Or did you want to take a photograph of the truck going across the field? I think with the stuff you're trying to shoot, you need longer reach. 18-55 is ok for close up work, and I love my 18-135 lens as a general walkaround (Pentax), but every time I go somewhere with action that's further than 10-20yds away I wish I had a 55-300 (or a DA* 60-250 if money was no object). The primes are fine and fun, I love my 50mm 1.7 and 28mm f/2.8, but I'm not taking them to shoot fast moving trucks or stuff relatively far away. _________________________ Never run out of real estate, traction & ideas at the same time. 2012 Outback - 2008 Yamaha WR250R v2.0

I agree with this. And I love my 85 1.8...
