A buddy of mine out in Brockville does timber frame for a living. Guy does some pretty amazing stuff with wood. He had some downtime this winter and could fit us in his busy schedule. The gf and I really liked the Restoration Hardware tables, but for that much $$$ I'd rather have something better built and custom to our needs. We made two last minute trips out to Brockville to finalize design and stain options (My gf calls then arguments, I call them discussion, lol!) In the end we couldn't be happier. There aren't any screws in this table at all, it's completely held together with proper joinery. The attention to detail is unreal. The wood we used was Spalted Maple along with some Ambrosia Maple. The spalting is actually a fungus that makes its way into the wood, it's unbelievable.

Overall length is 10ft by 48in by 3.5in. The top itself weighed about 300lbs (That was fun to bring inside)

Bases in ready to accept the top.

The cutout for the massive stringer that will run the length of the table.

Stringer before it goes in.

Stringer in place.

Walnut pegs that tighten up the stringer to the pedestals. Nice little touch with the different type of wood.

The mad scientist at work.

Ready to for the top.

All assembled. He also had a surprise for us, he made a matching bench \:\) We had no idea and were pretty taken back when we started to unload the truck.

A close up of the spalting I was talking about.

That's a beautiful table.

I hope those aren't the chairs going with it tho.

That's fantastic, Bill. I was a little disappointed to see so little spalting throughout the build, but you can definitely see it on the bench. Spalted and Ambrosia is fantastic stuff, and not cheap. I really dig that countersunk mortise he used for the leg where the stretcher connects.

Ambrosia is actually really cool, too. It's caused by infestations of Ambrosia Beetles burrowing through the wood, leaving behind the figures and holes. It's hard to find good Ambrosia that's not ruined.

We didn't want too much spalting on the top itself as it would have been a bit too busy for our tastes (I've got some cutting boards which are spalted like crazy).. Lots of holes in the top as well, kinda hard to get good pics of them with the phone.

I know right? lol! I gotta bring in the baseboards this week for paint, nothing will ever dry outside with these temps. I'm hoping to get them installed in the next few days.

Understandable. Next time you get something custom built, check in to Curly Maple. That stuff is downright incredible. It looks 3 dimensional.

It's kind of funny in humans and animals, we look for symmetry and perfection for what "beauty" means, but in woods, the most beautiful ones are actually the most defective.

My buddy had a real hard time putting stain on this table, he probably asked us a half a dozen times if we just wanted to stick with poly to preserve all the fine little details

We've got some really nice details on the top. I'll break out the DSLR and grab some better pics when the sunlight cooperates.

Hah, it's funny you mention that. My first thought was "He stained Ambrosia and Spalted Maple? Noooooo :(" It still looks great, but I'm also a fan of preserving the color of those :P

Here's something special.. Spalted Curly Maple \:o

Notice how thin it is? It's obviously been cut for veneering since it's so expensive lol

No way we'd ever been able to get something like this if we didn't tear down a bunch of walls during our reno.

Aside from the 4 meals we have on it per year it doubles up as a solid newborn cloth stand, breast pump equipment, bottles, and some receipts.

As underused and impractical dining areas/tables are in general, I still love a beautiful table like this.

I *hope* this becomes the homework, sit around and socialize, whatever table. We like to sit around the island, but that's a max of 4 people.

my dining room table has turned into the kid's art area as much as we try to get them to do it elsewhere.

I want some big tufted wingback chairs on each end, then some nice fabric ones down the side. We'll see though, she does the interior decorating crap, and usually shoots down my ideas pretty quick

Is the finish on it durable? One thing I hate about my teak table is that you can't write on a piece of paper without making imprints on the table.

Pretty sure he did 2 coats of wood conditioner (So that stain didn't blotch the wood), 1 stain coat and 3 coats of satin poly (All oil based). Sanded in between each coat of poly as well.
