I am due for a new laptop, I've looked around and I am not sure if I am making the best decision so I need input.

It has to be from bestbuy as I have a gift card to the store that will cover most of the cost, it has to be under $800 taxes in (I am flexible if it gets me everything I want).

Must have:

15" screen
Long battery life
keyboard with number pad
quiet keyboard

Nice to have:

Lenovo (I might be off my rocker here, but I've had great success with Lenovo for close to a decade and am somewhat brand loyal, unless you convince me otherwise - have had Dell/Toshiba/HP in the past)

In addition, are docking stations for Lenovo at all interchangeable?

I don't need it for gaming, it's strictly for pushing excel/photoshop/internet.

This one seems to fit the bill, but from what I gather it's geared towards gamers and battery life is average, everything else is right up my alley

Lenovo G50 15.6" Laptop - Black (AMD A6-6310 / 1TB HDD / 8GB RAM / Windows 8.1)

whatever one you get you may want to upgrade the battery for longer life

I like lenovo as well, just watch, they usually give low processors on the majority of models now unless you spend some more $$

just buy an extra battery for $100 and you'll get twice the battery life

FWIW, I'm starting to almost strictly stick with Asus...

I bought the G-something Lenovo for the sister, and... I just found it sluggish, and heavy.

There are 'generic' base stations you can get for $100-200 @ TigerDirect/Canada Computers ... (Plugs into a USB port)

Having a rather LARGE group of friends in the hardware sales/distributor/PC chain GM side of things, pretty much echos only Lenovo or Asus for notebook brands... I've seen some of the crap they peddle....ugh.

Can you live with an EXTERNAL number pad? (probably not) ... If you can, you can reduce the overall footprint of the notebook, and even rip out the DVD drive.

I don't really want to carry kne around that's for sure. Notebook reviews said the batter lasts over 5 hours without playing games, if that's true I can live with it but would prefer longer and definitely don't want to carry an extra battery.

No way I am doing external number pad.

Furbal what was sluggish about the Lenovo? Reviews say in the price range it's one of the quicker ones. I am also open to throwing in a ssd as well.

Which Asus would you get in the price range?

SSD is a definite must. The one I could afford for my sis had a stone-age HDD.

So, the sluggishness was attributed to that mainly. The RAM by default that it had was also kinda terrible. Plus it defaulted with Win8 which also slowed shit down.

I can't find the model number I purchased, but it def was a G-series bullshit, and it was just huge.

Personally, I want a notebook with backlit keyboard. It's a must as I do shit in bed at night with the lights off. <fap fap fap fap fap>

If you can, pick one that already has SSD, and/or a SSD+HDD combo. It's a pain to transfer the shit from 1 disk to another. (You'd prefer not to do a fresh install from scratch...)

Looks like the bb.ca site is already shutdown for boxing day sales

DERP... I have a Lenovo ...oops.

For myself, I'm running on a refurb Lenovo IdeaPad U430...

It matched most if not all of my specs:
- i5 or faster
- decent RAM and upgradeable to 6-8GB
- SSD (this one has a hybrid SSD+HDD)
- backlit kb
- relatively small/light
- touch-screen was a bonus ... I rarely use
- $500 price point.
- relatively 'sleek' looking, and not a fucking dinosaur

I picked it up from CC as a refurb.

I'd also suggest something with VGA and HDMI outputs (if they all don't have that at that size/price point) ... Will come in use for your PowerPoint Ranger shit...

SSDs are cheap, there's no reason to run a standard spindle HDD anymore. I wouldn't worry about ordering it with a SSD though, just get one off Newegg and install once you get the machine.

The bonus of this is that you can remove all the bullshit bloatware as well that comes with the factory install.

How big of a pain is it to reinstall win 8 on a new ssd?

I wouldn't do it. I can't be bothered with the (possible) hassle/pain of specific drivers, etc...

i.e. for my Lenovo notebook there's like 'Motion Control' and other apps/drivers specific to Lenovo and/or this specific model ... Win8 won't have that shit standard...

The ideal way is to rip out the old HDD, plug both the NEW and the OLD into a desktop, and clone the drive. It's a pain ...

I did a short stint working at bb many years ago. They would St up the boxing day stuff just before closing on christmas eve so if you go in tonight a few min before they close you will more than likely be able to get the sale price as it would then be displayed.

It's very easy with software like Macrium Reflect. I have used it numerous times to clone drives, even going from 500+ gb drives to 128gb SSD drives, Macrium sorts out the partition sizes accordingly.

I have used others in the past like EasUs but find Macrium the best.

Even if you do a reinstall from scratch, software like DriverBooster will go out and update almost all the drivers on your laptop without you doing a thing. It's a must have.

times have changed. Plug new SSD into USB enclosure, run Macrium relfect from Windows, select source and destination disk, let it do it's thing and after a short while swap the new HDD into the destination laptop and away you go.

I agree 100%. I have an older Lenovo SL510 with crappy celeron processor, 2gb ram etc but after adding 128gb SSD it makes things enjoyable. With prices of SSD nowadays its almost a no brainer to get an SSD. Some laptops also allow for mSata SSD so you can keep the platter drive as storage and add an mSata SSD as primary.

I did that on my Ideapad i7 and thing is a champ.

Thoughts on this drive?

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.asp...#scrollFullInfo

What is mSata? platter driver?

Watched a bunch of reviews on youtube, one thing that stood out is that it has cheap hinges. I've seen shitty laptops with finiky hinges and that would really annoy me especially if it's touch screen. Anything that can be done about that? Should I even run win 8 on it or go back to 7?

edit: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK i saw this ultrabook x1 now and i want it BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD.... no numberpad doe, fak

mSata is chip based like SSD only no big enclosure, and about 1/3 the size so its more like a piece of ram.

The best SSD to get are Samsing bar none. Always score very high.

One of our original work laptops is an acer and its a tank. It's about 6 years old now so not sure if it has gone down hill since then but we knew buying it back then that quality was debatable but this thing has surprised us all. Everything except the Dvd drive functions fine, and it's in the field all the time not sitting on some desk all day.

Freedom is overrated!!!

I've had a couple of acers and they both bit the shit from overheating. I took both apart and cleaned all the dust and even went as far as putting new thermal paste on and the shit was still overheating. Never again.

Has anyone bought online from bestbuy.com and have it shipped here? They have a wider Lenovo selection.
