LS1 swapped Volvo? What would be *the* Volvo to go with? Not a wagon vs sedan choice, but I mean which generation? is any one car more well-suited for a swap like that? Is the cost even worth the trouble?

The choice boils down to the 240 (which is the bodystyle everyone has posted so far) and the 740/940 (which is the bodystyle of my wagon). The 240 looks better, the 7/940 is a little better built (but just a little) though John MC on the out there board would argue the 240 is better built.
I think the most important thing is to find a rust free example, which should mean mostly post '85 cars.
I'm partial to wagons, but the best looking Volvo (thanks to Bertone) was the 780 coupe....
They're a bit rare, but they can be found. And V6 ones are all begging for an engine swap anyway.
cheers, scott

Yeah, it's the PRV v6. Peugeot Renault and Volvo. And it's a giant, 90* all aluminum SOHC affair. It looks cool, but it did a shit job of lubricating the cams and so were repair intensive. And of course the cams couldn't just have caps and lift straight up for removal, but had to be slid into the head from the firewall side. Volvo's replacement cam kits came with a hole saw and rubber plugs for the firewall. One of my best friends (and ex-roommate and wife's ex-boyfriend, etc) used to have a Volvo 264GL. It was hella nice to drive, but it had already gone through one set of cams when I talked him into buying it. He made it from 150k to roughly 275k miles before he gave up on the car without the cams going bad again, so they weren't as bad as Volvo guys made them out to be, but they're still unloved.
cheers, scott

1800 = winnAr... Good luck finding a decent one, though.. Start you search in the northeast and northwest. They seem to be the "hot-spots" for classic volvos.

I come from a Volvo family, as my dad is the only owner his 1800 has ever known. I really wanted to get a 780, but I found a lot of issues beyond the difficulty in finding a decent example to start out with. There seems to be some issues finding some parts for them. The engine stuff is common to other late 80's very early 90's Volvo, but some of the mechanicals, interior, and exterior parts were specific to the 780. Because they were a very limited run vehicle, it is hard to find used stuff. What is out there is priced very high for anything specific to the 780's as a result.
I would say go for a 240 if you want to do a V8 swap. At least here in Cali, if you look around hard enough you can find a decent example that is rust free and in decent condition. I don't know if there are any LS1 kits, but I know there are some for the Ford 5.0's and such.
