After installing my turbo kit, I wanted a different place for my license plate that didn’t block as much of the intercooler. I wish I could go plate-less in the front but a bright blue Civic doesn’t exactly blend in.

After looking at the front of the car, I decided a good place to put the plate would be in the lower lip area on the passenger side. I wanted to get it as low as I could without worrying about scraping on inclines. I decided on the passenger side because I didn’t want to block any air going to the hot side of the intercooler.

These are the supplies I purchased:

One sheet of 8” x 24” sheet metal.
Two 1” rubber bushings
Two 1” OD stainless washers, ¼” ID
Two 3/8” plastic washer
Two 1” hex head stainless bolts, M6 x 1.0
Two ½” Phillips head stainless bolts, M6 x 1.0
Two stainless nuts, M6 x 1.0
Rust inhibiting primer and black spray paint.

I first cut the sheet down to 8” x 11 ¾”. I determined this length by the length of the plate. I went in slightly on each side for a cleaner look. I then got under the car and removed 2 of the bolts holding on the front lip. The holes are 7” apart, center-to-center. This is where the bracket will be fastened.

I then went to the sheet metal and drilled 2 holes for the lip bolts and then two more holes for the license plate on the other end. The holes for the lip side I placed 7 “ apart and aprox. 1” up. To locate the plate holes I just laid the plate down over it and drilled.

It would be nice to have a sheet metal bender about now. I did not have one and had to use my imagination. I place the bend 1-1/2” up. The bend is at the end that the license plate will be bolted to. I gave the bend an angle of about 60 degrees. This will angle the plate down a little more and direct some air up into the grill.

After a test fit, primer and paint, I mounted the license plate to the bracket with the ½” Phillips bolts, the two nuts, and small plastic washers.

For the lip side I cut down the rubber washers so there was enough bolt going through to securely fasten the bracket, but still kept the bracket away from the lip itself. I don’t have a measurement for that, you’ll just have to test fit to your liking.

The 1” washer is for the bolt head side. You can use a smaller one if you want, I wanted more surface area for the bolt to transfer pressure to. I also cut some vacuum line I had lying around into strips and glued them on the lip side to act as a cushion if I did bottom out the bracket.

Bolt it in and there you go!

(Quick note, I made this bracket in the spring and just now decided to do a how to on it. This is why I was unable to take pictues as I was doing it, that and the parts look kinda used. )

not bad, just gotta be careful when going over speed bumps or else that license plate is coming off along w/ the bottom brackets of the front lip.

Good call. I lived in Ohio for about 4 years. I got pulled over for speeding on I-71 near Medina (15 miles south of Cleveland) and got a $90 ticket for no front license plate.

The picture makes it appear lower than it actually sits. I originally did this in the spring and drove with it all summer with no issues.

We don't have large speed humps where I drive so the only thing I have to worry about is high inclined drives. On some that I have driving up/down I don't rub if I enter/exit at a slight angle. But yes, good to mention.

I like mine because it is non destructive to the bumper. I use existing mounting holes. It's important to me not to create new holes in the bumper. I also spent about 6$ on it total.

Also, if he put it where yours is Napolean he wouldnt get the full effect of his Intercooler...It's not THAT much in the way, but it is enough.

Yeah, HID wannabe bulbs. Light output is very white actually. I was suprised to see the majority of people think the location is wacky. Oh well, I'm more concerned with not blocking the intercooler than plate asthetics.

Uhhh...ok. Again Napoleon, what I did uses existing bolt holes. This bracket you keep pushing requires you to drill new holes in your bumper. Something I will not do. Mine works fine for me. Thanks

I know and it looks good. The only holes you have to drill you will never see even if you took the bracket off. All in all good write up and godd fabbing.

FYI... Blocking 3" of your Intercooler opening isn't going to affect your intercooler efficiency ONE BIT.

Get the nice looking mount. If I still had my Si, I'd rip that thing off with the first time i go over a speedbump.

my $.02:

Buzzbomb, nice write up, but what about flipping that bracket up (so it no longer hangs low), and then drilling new holes into the bracket (and the license plate if needed) to move the lic plate closer to the foglight. Because it does look a little bazaar having it hang below the bumper.

But if you're happy with it, then rock it out.

Toy,

Yeah, that is totally possible. My car is lowered on Neuspeed Sofsports so I don't seem to have clearance issues that I'm sure I'd have with other lowering springs. As long as I take angled drives at an angle and not straight on there have been no problems.

This is my second year having it with no issues.

Yea, I live in WA and I've been pulled over three times for not having my front plate not mounted correctly. Each time I informed the man in blue that I did not realize that there was a law about it and that I would mount it the next chance I got. Each time I got a warning. Luck? My plate is now mounted "correctly" but now I don't think I can afford even trying to place it anywhere else since my cars are well-known among the Police force now and have an extensive record with them. = \ To much info? Maybe, but take it as a lesson. You get behind the wheel of a vehicle you take on a responsibility. Drive "safe". = )

Nice idea there dude! I want to go plate less in front cause I am having problems upon making the metal bender.

i believe you can get a CRV license plate bracket since they attach to the grill instead of the bumper... i got a couple friends that have gone that route and move them to the side for the "jdm look"
